Welcome to the Illustrator's Corner


In 1991 Tomie dePaola successfully lobbied the board of the then Society of Children's Book Writers to officially include illustrators in the organization.  The Society of Children's Book Writers became the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and programs and grants for illustrator members have been expanding ever since.  Click on the links below for more information about some of the things we do just for illustrators.  Check with your region for more illustrator-specific events and programs.










Illustrator's Gallery

All SCBWI Illustrator members are eligible to enter their portfolio in the illustrator gallery.  Each month we choose an illustrator from the gallery to be our featured illustrator. 

Please keep in mind that this gallery is used by professionals in the Children’s Book Publisher industry. Please only post images that are appropriate for this marketplace. SCBWI retains the right to delete content that it deems inappropriate

To upload your portfolio, log in and click on the "My Portfolio" link on your member home page.
Once you've uploaded your illustration portfolio your name will appear in the Illustrator Search. 





 

Tomie dePaola Award

Given annually to an illustrator of promise chosen by Tomie himself. 

The award consists of full tuition and transportation to the NY SCBWI Winter Conference and $1000 for art supplies.  






Don Freeman Grant

Don Freeman was a renowned illustrator and an early supporter of SCBWI.  He established this award to help picture book artists further their training and work towards publication. This award is now sponsored by a generous grant from Amazon.com.  A $2000 and $500 grant are given annually to an SCBWI illustrator member











Student Illustrator Scholarship

Each year, the SCBWI sponsors four conference scholarships for full-time graduate or undergraduate students studying illustration. 

The scholarship will provide:

Admission to all conference events including keynotes and breakout sessions

Entry in the Juried Portfolio Showcase. 
       
*Note: The winner of the portfolio showcase recieves a trip to New York City to meet with art directors


The Illustration Master Class (Los Angeles) or the Illustrator Intensive (New York) 


An individual portfolio consultation with an illustrator or art director  (Los Angeles only)


One year's SCBWI membership dues.




Art Spot!


Starting with the January/February issue of The Bulletin we will feature a member illustrator and a piece of spot art they submit to The Bulletin. In addition to worldwide recognition, the featured illustrator will receive $100 for their winning piece.

All SCBWI members are eligible to enter by submitting one or more spot illustrations following the guidelines below. Each month several other runner-up artists will be selected. Each runner-up will receive $25 for their art and have their name and piece published in The Bulletin.  SCBWI retains only the first-time rights, the artist keeps all other rights to use the art.
