Kirsten Walker

Bio:

I am an artist, educator, writer and mom.

I am finally sketching and painting more now that my four children ages 16-24 are reaching adulthood. A painting instructor a few years back incredulously asked why I hadn’t been painting more; I answered, “Four little interruptions.” With the 3 oldest children all in various stages of higher education and the youngest a junior in high school, my life is changing yet again.

Much of my inspiration comes from nature as I paint and sketch, places I’ve visited near home and afar. I don’t always complete the work outdoors but it’s a great way to bring the outdoors in as I sketch at my kitchen table with my family milling about around me. Being a charter board member of the Friends of Hammonasset and Friends of Brooksvale Park, state and local park advocacy groups, gives me consistent ideas for my art.

I hold an Art Education degree from SCSU, take art and writing courses when my schedule allows and just this past spring completed the Master Wildlife Conservationist Program offered through the CT DEP at Sessions Woods Wildlife Center in Burlington, CT.

For close to 7 years I was a freelance reporter and writer for the New Haven Register newspaper and had a column called Kirsten's Chronicles. Human interest, and often humorous and poignant essays about life.

In late winter each year I am the Sugarmaker at Brooksvale Park, making Maple Syrup and teaching hundreds about the process. I also work at the park part-time teaching children and adults about their natural world and assisting the ranger in the office, “computerizing” it as he calls it. If variety is the spice of life then I’d say mine is pretty spicy right now!
