Bio:

Dorinda Makana onalani Nicholson was born in Hawaii to a Hawaiian mother and Scotch-Irish father. As civilians, Dorinda’s family lived in Pearl Harbor. Standing in their front yard on the morning of December 7, 1941, she clung to her father’s side while enemy torpedo bombers screamed overhead skimming the treetops. Dorinda could see the pilot’s goggles.

Her story remained untold until she wrote PEARL HARBOR CHILD, followed by PEARL HARBOR WARRIORS, a 2003-04 Mark Twain award nominee. A DVD version of the book was named a Notable DVD for kids for 2007 by the American Library Association.

Her third book, REMEMBER WORLD WAR II, Kids Who Survived Tell Their Stories, was published by National Geographic. In this newest book, Dorinda captures stories of courageous children from all over the world who survived WWII.

Dorinda’s mission is to bring World War II history alive for young readers. She is a popular speaker at young writers’ conferences because she makes history personal, not just facts and dates.

She has been featured in People Magazine and both the Learning and Discovery Channels.
