Jenny Desmond Walters

Bio:

Jenny Desmond Walters is the daughter of a published mathematician and an early childhood specialist.

Learning and literature have been a part of her life from an early age. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in curriculum and instruction, Jenny led the educational services department at a PBS television station affiliate where she received national recognition for her outstanding educational initiatives.

Later, Jenny was the Tennessee state educational consultant for Steck-Vaughn Publishing where she worked with book industry professionals promoting new books, writing curriculum and conducting workshops.

Jenny has published several children’s magazine articles and is an avid writer and observer of life. Having spent the last few years in East Asia, including two years in Japan near Tokyo, and two years in Seoul, Republic of Korea, she rarely runs out of stories to write.

In Korea, Jenny had the privilege of founding the first Korea chapter of SCBWI, and she served as the Regional Advisor for that chapter. In an effort to provide a comprehensive and exciting program for members in Korea, Jenny worked diligently to make connections in the Asian market while helping bridge the talents of authors and illustrators between the East and West.

During this period, she began collaborating with Korean publishers of English language books for young readers and has since written and sold nearly a dozen original stories. Publication dates for the first several titles are set for Spring 2012.

Jenny returned to America in 2010, spending a year in San Antonio, Texas, where she learned about cowboys and armadillos. Not surprisingly, Texas offered a whole new range of cultural experiences and inspired many new writing adventures.

When an opportunity arose to return to Japan for a second time, Jenny and her family returned to their previous home in 2011. In January 2012, she accepted a position as the Assistant Regional Advisor for SCBWI Tokyo and is working to continue efforts to support the talented writers and illustrators in Asia.
