Mathilda Wheeler

Bio:

Mathilda Reading Wheeler (Mattie) graduated from Duke University in 1980 with a B.A. in English, though she double-majored in drama. While attempting to break into theater in New York City, she took her first creative writing course at Columbia University. After she started having children, most of her writing focused on children's literature. She attended the Highlights Writers' Conference in Chautauqua, NY in 1994 and then received her certificate from the Institute of Children's LIterature.

She has spent YEARS working on a middle grade/YA suspense novel with which she has a love/hate relationship, but she loves playing around with different genres, especially early readers and the occasional picture book. She served as representative for the SCBWI-Western Washington Bellingham Network from 2005-2007 and continues to facilitate a children's writers critique group.

In addition to writing, her love of theater keeps her involved with community theater -- occasionally acting, sometimes directing or teaching. Mathilda also sings with the Bellingham Threshold Singers, bringing the comfort of song to the bedside of those critically ill or dying.

Her blog, www.thewonderwriter.com, started in January 2011, showcases some of her artwork and musings about writing. She has tried to gear it to the younger reader. Mathilda won 7th place in the 2011 Writer's Digest Competition, children's/YA category for her short story, "Moving On."
