Bio:
As a naturalist, Brooke Bessesen studies wildlife and supports conservation. She has had many unique animal experiences and traveled to far-off lands, rich in biodiversity. She has blogged about her experiences at www.brookebessesen.com/blog.
Brooke brings her tremendous animal experience and knowledge to the writing table and is the recipient of the 2012 Judy Goddard Children’s Author/Illustrator Award. Her most recent books are nonfiction leveled readers about Invertebrates. She also has three popular picture books that combine humor and fact. "Look Who Lives in the Ocean!" is a humorous nonfiction picture book about marine species, and a sequel to "Look Who Lives in the Desert!" (2004), which received the Glyph Award for Best Children's Nonfiction and Southwest Books of the Year Top Pick for Kids. Her vibrant artwork is created from pencil drawings and colored with fabrics.
Her book, "Zachary Z. Packrat and His Amazing Collections" (2008), illustrated by "Flo & Friend's" cartoonist Jenny Campbell, was the 2008-09 Phoenix Public Library Project G.O.A.L. book and was a 2011 Grand Canyon Reader Award nominatee.
Brooke speaks at schools providing student presentations and writing workshops, as well as in-service courses for primary and middle grade educators. She has been a speaker for the International Reading Association, state reading association conferences, educational fairs, book festivals, reading councils, and has spoken for numerous other groups and libraries. Brooke occasionally teaches an 8-week class, “The ABCs of Writing for the Children’s Market” for the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing in Tempe.
