I am a writer of children's book by night and a senior commissioning editor for a children’s publisher by day, so I sit on both sides of the fence . . .
I read the manuscripts that come across my desk, waiting to fall in love, and I make those hard decisions every day about what is going to work best for my publisher’s list.
Then as evening comes, I put on my writer’s cap and begin work on my novel.
I polish and tighten, knowing that someone like the editor-me [who is a little stressed and overwhelmed by stories] is going to look at this novel one day and make up their minds pretty quickly as to whether this is something that they can take forward.
I know how rare it is to find that RIGHT book, so I know how hard I have to work.
My novel, THE BOOK OF WONDERS, is a fantastical, action-packed response to the mythology of The Arabian Nights—but this time the sultan doesn’t get away with murder. It is for a 10+ audience.
