Bio:

My picture books are lyrical (even poetic), layered and eclectic, with (usually) strong yet subtle underlying themes. I have published over 25 picture books (as well as numerous School Readers, junior fiction novels and series) in over 25 countries and won numerous awards including the 2010 New Zealand Post Children's Book of the Year for Old Hu-hu.

Originally from Brisbane, I live with my wife, Marion, a well-known potter, and an ever-growing coterie of chooks, in a house with a grass roof in the middle of nowhere in the far south of the South Island. When I'm not writing, I'm either in my garden singing to my vegies or conversing with my chooks, in the creek swimming or off exploring the strange land I've discovered at the back of my wardrobe ... though that last bit may not be completely true.

My titles include Old Hu-hu (Winner NZ Post Book of the Year 2010); Kiss!Kiss! Yuck!Yuck! (Winner NZ Post Best Picture Book and Children’s Choice awards in 2007, plus a Flicker Tale award in North Dakota); Hill & Hole; Moon Cow; Hester & Lester, Seesaw Po and Melu. My latest series, Dinosaur Rescue, is into it's 8th episode with two mash-ups (ie 4 episodes in 1 volume) PLUS an activity book due out this year. It's very humbling to receive so many emails from mums of reluctant readers saying they're so excited their sons (mostly) have finally found stories to get excited about. It's a great job when it's going well!
