Astrid Arellano

Bio:

Astrid was born in Chile in 1971.

When Astrid was 5 years old the family moved to Germany. In Braunschweig she started school and first learnt to read. Pippi Longstocking and other Astrid Lindgren books were her favourites. She also looked forward to new Asterix and Obelix comics and Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn took her on many more adventures. After 5 idyllic years in Germany Astrid's family returned to Chile.

Chile in the 80s was in deep recession and political unrest due to Pinochet's regime. Despite years of trying to make ends meet, Astrid's parents could not afford an education for their three daughters. Therefore, they made the brave decision to emigrate to Australia.

In December 1988 the family arrived in Sydney with 5 suitcases to their name, no place to live and no jobs but a firm resolve to make a better life in a country full of opportunities.

Astrid begun to write in 2008 although the characters in her stories have been with her for at least 2 decades. She is currently working on two middle grade novels, one of which is nearing completion. She also writes both adult short stories and plans to write her first adult novel in 2013.

Astrid studied Medicine at Adelaide University and qualified as a specialist in Infectious Diseases in 2007.

When not writing, Astrid spends her time with her husband Craig, her two boys, Henry and Oliver and working part time at the WA TB Control Program and Rockingham General Hospital.

She lives in South Fremantle.
