Bio:
My name is Matina Genkova-Mpofu. I was born and grew up in Bulgaria (a small but beautiful country in Europe). I graduated from the University of National Economics in Varna, Bulgaria, with a Masters degree in Building Science.
I have always loved books (and movies). Probably the way to make you escape the real world.
The first time I came to the Old Continent, specifically Zimbabwe, was a while ago. I visited the country with my brother as tourists and we both fell in love with Africa. A year later I met my future husband and that’s how I ended up first in Zimbabwe and later in South Africa.
Whoever thought that I would write! I started writing at the beginning of 2006. Everybody was in shock, including my husband and even myself. I was supposed to be the mathematical and technical half of the family. He is the one using words (a journalist by profession).
My first book is dedicated to my son. It’s called “Mom, why am I different?” I had the idea in my head for about 2 weeks or so but when I woke up early on the morning of Valentine’s day that year, my thoughts were so fast and I wrote it in a flash. Though the text was read and edited by many people, it was hardly changed.
After that I wrote 3 more books in a short space of time. And after that, a few more every now and then. They are yet to be published.
My only son is a very curious and intelligent child who has been the inspiration for most of my books. I have always loved kids and their innocence, openness, honesty.
So far, I have had 2 books published by Queen Protea Press: “Mom, why am I different?” and “Twins” – both non-fiction, feel-good books for children from 4 to 9 years old.
Currently I’m working on two or three other children’s books and I’m exploring opportunities on how to publish them. I feel that my books are unique in that they are very different from most in the market.
