Bio:

I am a dad of two sons. I see my key role as a dad to encourage my kids to explore ideas and pursue them. Ideas and innovation are a key factor for survival and success in the world of today and tomorrow. Interestingly, the ability and experience of exploring ideas is not really taught in schools.

The book "What are we going to do today" Brilliant ideas with Hoobsy and Dubsy" is the first kids book I wrote. I wrote it for my kids for two reasons: 1) I was heavily on business trips and wanted to give some time back to my family. I consider the book as a time savings account for my kids. 2) The stories contain the message of exploring and pursuing ideas.

It is important to me that the message of the book stays not only in the book but it leaves the book and enters the world of the readers. Therefore, the stories contain ideas which are close to the world of the kids. I deliberately have not chosen unrealistic inventions (e.g. the skateboard which makes coffee, the car) but things which the reader can do immediately after he or she put down the book. Everything is wrapped in humor and with great illustrations.

Beside this thinking ...

Helmut Degen was born in 1964 in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany. Osnabrück is famous for the location of the Peace of Westphalia which was a series of peace treaties signed in 1648 in Osnabrück and Münster. These treaties ended the Thirty Years' War in the Holy Roman Empire.

Helmut works a software engineering consultant, mostly in North America and occasionally in Europe. He earned a master’s degree in Informatics (minors: Economics and Philosophy) from the University of Karlsruhe and a PhD in Information Science from the Freie Universität Berlin, both in Germany. He lives with his family in New Jersey, USA.

Beside good ideas, Helmut loves excellent, vegetarian food, riding the bicycle, and having a good time with his family
