I began writing at the age of 9 years old. My fourth-grade teacher required the class to write a story with our assigned spelling words each week. My challenge was to use ALL of them! It was great fun, and I've been writing ever since!
I wrote a "Letter to the Editor" of THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER (our local newspaper in Charlotte, NC) at the age of 15 and discovered that my opinion did actually matter to some. That experience gave me a voice I had not realized before the editorial was printed.
I received a BA in Elementary Education from Limestone College in Gaffney, SC in 1977, where I was editor-in-chief of the campus literary magazine, THE CANDELABRA, for two years. I honed my editorial skills during that time and for the next 30+ years, I enjoyed writing picture books for small children, poetry, short stories and actually tackled a middle-grade novel.
I held a K-8th grade teaching license for 31 years. During that time I taught in public and private schools in Oklahoma, Indiana, South Carolina and North Carolina. I loved writing material for my students to enjoy.
In 1996, I left my teaching career to travel in a new career with my husband, Bert. For the past 17 years, we have traveled in Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, Alabama and the Carolinas sharing educational and inspirational assembly programs for children in day care centers, preschools, Head Start sites and libraries. We LOVE working with this age group! They are the inspiration for many of my latest writing projects!
