Miss Licorice

Bio:

I was born in Steven’s Point, Wisconsin on March 27, 1978. While a child growing up in Waunakee, Wisconsin, a vivid memory for me is one that involves listening to records and read-along books on my orange, Fisher Price record player. This, along with my parents’ nightly story-time, fostered my ability to read, my love for stories, and my musical sense. Consequently, my adoration of certain music legends also sprouted. The album covers of Michael Jackson, Reba Mc Entire, Kenny Rogers, and Alabama always remind me of home.

I attended Waunakee High School and was involved with the Concert and Marching Band and I was also a member and captain of the Dance Team. My performance ethic sprouted from these activities. I graduated from Waunakee High School in 1996, and for the following six years I was a student at U.W.-Whitewater. It was here that my love for children’s stories had a reawakening. A class entitled Children’s Literature taught me how to critique children’s stories and to choose, perfect, and perform a story to an audience. My first performance (done on a magnet board while I read the script in my lap) was terrifying! It was also extremely satisfying.

After graduating with a degree in Elementary Education, I took some years “off” in New York (continuing to work alongside children) to be foot-loose and fancy free. I highly recommend it.

My next performance came in 2005. I created a felt board story of The Legend of Jumping Mouse, complete with sound effects and a voice-over reading. This was performed for my Kindergarten students at St. Anthony’s School in Milwaukee, WI. As a predominantly Hispanic school, it was here I learned that no matter what language children speak or what literary abilities they possess, they are deeply eager to engage with an adult over a story. They also enjoy being entertained.

I currently reside in Theresa, WI with my husband and two sons. I am a substitute teacher and in my spare time I enjoy story-crafting, hiking, biking, and being with my family and friends.

I hope to see you at a show!
