About Me:
Drawing is my key to the secret garden, my way down the rabbit hole, my looking glass.
A lot of artists like to use this sentence to be a beginning. For me, it has some different meaning. I found this key for a long time. As an undergraduate student of Renmin University, I learned Painting, Chinese Painting, Photography, Calligraphy, Advertising and Graphic Design. After three years, I found I always had a sketch book I hand. Looking back to the past years, I found some pieces memory: I got the first sketch book on my 3 years old birthday; I finished my 10th sketch book when I was 10; The first time to win the international award is on my 12 years old winter, etc. I just knew the drawing is so important to me. I drew a series of illustration to be my Undergraduate course graduation design. I wrote a thesis that’s about the illustration has a Psychological intervention role. I got the first place of the final design and final thesis. And I got my BFA of Graphic Design.
People live for dreams and realities. For my dream, I decided to go to the US to learn Illustration for my future study and life. I thought the illustrator need a free place; it has certain cultural and artistic atmosphere. San Francisco is a good choice. So I came to Academy Art University. Cause I learned drawing for almost 20 years. So I had very good techniques of different mediums. I’d like to choose some different classes. Which I thought can help my drawing. I also liked to try the new medium, that’s my interest. So I went to Boarders every week, read a lot of illustration books. I found the Children’s Book Illustration is my favorite. When I was a kid, I didn’t have so many kinds of book to read. In other words, Chinese Children’s Book’s market was not mature at that moment. Right now, the Children have more and more book to decide. But the situation of Children’s Book and Children’s Book illustrators in China are not directly comparable to that in the US. As a Chinese illustrator, I want to change the situation. I want to make a Chinese style Children’s Book and show it to the whole world. I deeply want to contribute to the exchange and cooperation of American illustrators and Chinese illustrators. Drawing is my key; I want to be the bridge of the Illustration field: connect the world and China.
I spend a long time to research Psychology and Illustration’s relation. In my mind, good illustration books can help can activate resonance more directly, and they can also give some hints of human psychological problems. In the future, my works should aim at finding out the contradictions between the people and the society, providing psychology intervention and treatment upon different people; also provide different groups of people with a communication channel, by combining illustration with the other design mediums. That’s another trend of my works.
