Personal Statement of Hui Tan
I love Fine Arts. My passion in painting started at my early age and continue throughout my whole life.
I was born in mainland China in 1979. I started drawing lessons when I was five years old. In my early childhood, my mother found out that I had a strong interest in scrawling; she sent me to the GuangZhou Children’s Palace of China to take professional painting classes. I remember that my teachers used story-telling technique to initiate us into illustration skills. That fired up my interest and imagination. I absolutely enjoyed my over 20 years of art training in the Children’s Palace. It set my goal and path to become an artist.
Due to the lack of resources and the education system in China, I majored in Commercial Art Design instead of my beloved fine arts during my university years. It was a difficult decision. I really wish I could be like the young art students here in this country and had the opportunities to follow my heart to choose fine arts instead. Nevertheless, I never give up in what I have great interest; I keep painting during my whole university years. I started doing illustrations up to now for the Guang Zhou Daily newspapers which is the mainstream daily newspapers in one of the largest southern cities in China.
After I graduated from university, I worked full time in the GuangDong TV station to host an art TV program in this main television network in the city. At the same time I still worked part time for the GuangZhou newspapers as an illustrator and as an illustration teacher at the GuangZhou Children’s Palace.
My work experiences in China really broaden my scope and knowledge in both traditional and contemporary art. Through my job at the art TV programs, I was involved from research to on-air interviews with master artists. I was fortunate to get acquainted numerous prominent artists and learnt from their different painting styles and art works. It was amazing that I got the chances to gain great improvements in my painting through my job.
During the 2000-2008 period, I participated in several national art competitions and was awarded the Distinguish Chinese Youth Artist in Beijing and the Distinguish Young Artist in GuangDong.
I came to live in Los Angeles in 2008. I am excited to the new art world opens to me. I have actively participated in numerous art exhibitions in local art galleries and got encouraging feedbacks and supports from the communities. I am currently planning to pursue a master degree program at Laguna Art and Design College to further my knowledge in fine arts.
My paintings basically focus in using the realism art technique to project the characters and objects in a story-telling way. I have taken several painting classes by renowned artists, such as Gary Meyer and Jeremy Lipking. I learn to control light and shade and to use coordinating palette of colors in my works. These are the main characteristics of my artwork at this stage. I will continue to explore the realism art technique to present stories in my illustration artwork.
