Bio:

I love to make people laugh. And I love history. Putting those two passions together led to my last two picture books: LUCKY JAKE, which is set during the Gold Rush, and WHEN WISHES WERE HORSES, a story set in the Old West. Houghton Mifflin arranged for fantastic illustrations for each of those stories. Wade Zahares used wonderful colors and shapes to bring Jake, his pet, his Pa, and the miners of Crystal Creek to life. In illustrating WHEN WISHES WERE HORSES, Brad Sneed proved he knows horses backward and forward,top to bottom. He's also terrific at creating people who look startled.

My older picture books, RIGHT HERE ON THIS SPOT, the story of a farm field from the Ice Age to the present in 32 pages (I condensed a little), A VISIT WITH GREAT-GRANDMA which has an intergenerational-multicultural aspect, and IN GRANDPA'S WOODS, which celebrates the useful beauty of wooded land are quieter, or more thoughtful, or maybe more thought-provoking.

The stories I've had published in magazines are a reflection of my heart and my experiences. My grandpa repaired clocks. (Lillian and Grandpere / Cricket) One of my daughters forgot her Valentine list. (The Valentine Riddle / Highlights) The electricity went out whenever we had a bad storm. (Kum Ba Yah / Shine Brightly) The list could go on.

The poems which arrive sometimes, I'm sure through Divine blessing, and have been published in various magazines.

Somewhere under this gray hair, there's a preschooler who would love to go skipping off to a playground, and a grade-schooler who bites her nails over everything. They come out to keep me company when I tap my computer keys.
