Bio:
SANDRA HAVRILUK holds an AB in English from the University of Georgia and an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University, concentration in Writing for Young and Adult and Children. Her mentors in this graduate study included Joyce McDonald (award-winning Swallowing Stones and The Devil on My Heels) and Susan Campbell Bartoletti (winner of Newbery Honor for Hitler Youth).
Sandra has attended the prestigious Chautauqua Writer’s Foundation in July 2008, where she worked with Carolyn Yoder, editor at Calkins Creek, and author Eileen Spinelli (Summerhouse Time) on verse novels and picture books. She was accepted by the highly selective and prestigious Rutgers One-on-One Plus Conference and attended in October 2009.
An English teacher, Sandra has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and at present is an adjunct instructor at Gwinnett Technical College. She holds professional memberships in the Atlanta Writer’s Club (AWC), the Society of Children Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
Sandra is seeking representation for her creative thesis completed in the MFA program, a Young Adult manuscript written in free verse entitled Benevolence. An excerpt from this novel was awarded the 2009 Fiction Writing Award in YA Literature from the Atlanta Writer’s Club. She is completing a picture book on the Montgomery Bus Boycott and is also at work on a Southern Gothic mystery entitled The Secret of Elijah.
