Bio:
Best known for my award-winning biography/art book, THE AMAZING PAPER CUTTINGS OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, which revealed the famous Danish author's little-known artistic side, I've also written seven ZOOBOOKS about sea otters, dolphins, butterflies, rattlesnakes and other animal groups.
And of my five easy readers, THE GREAT TULIP TRADE (Random House) is the most applicable to our economy today since it's set in 1600's Holland during the tulip bulb frenzy called "tulipomania." This simple, elegant flower was considered more valuable than gold, diamonds or even houses, and the ridiculous increase in its perceived value was considered the FIRST financial bubble in history. My historical fiction tale has Anna wanting to keep her birthday tulips from her father, while passers-by keep wanting to trade their wares for her valuable tulips. She keeps having to weigh what the true value of a gift might be.
My most recent book, QUIRKY, YES--HOPELESS, NO: Practical Tips to Help Your Child with Asperger's Syndrome Be More Socially Accepted, won the San Diego Book Award in Education in June 2010. Written with Dr. Cynthia Norall, an expert in the field, QUIRKY is the first book about Asperger's offering both expert and parent perspectives.
Jargon free, QUIRKY provides the most reader friendly explanations of why Aspies think and behave the way they do, and what parents, grandparents and teachers can do to help them navigate the difficult social world that challenges kids and teens with Asperger's. Temple Grandin called QUIRKY "Fantastic" and Publisher's Weekly said it is "full of insights."
