Bio:
I am a working artist/illustrator living in Southwest Fort Worth, Texas. I now work in my home studio where I create paintings and develop picture book illustrations as well as commissioned illustrations. Lately I've been doing a lot of house portraits--- fun, colored pencil and ink drawings that include objects that portray a family's interests, their pets, and a view of their home. I am also working hard on new illustrations for three book ideas I am developing.
I earned a BFA in Studio Art from SMU in 1979. From there I worked for Neiman-Marcus in Dallas as a display artist and then as the Graphics and Signing Coordinator for their stores nationwide. Through the 80's I continued to work for NM, eventually freelancing design work and creating exclusive merchandise designs.
Later, I worked for Susan Crane Inc, where I designed gift wrap. That was a fun job in which I worked with about 5 other artists making gift wrap designs, tie on designs, and learned how to create repeat patterns. We silkscreened our sample wraps and showcased those for department stores' gift wrapping services. I had to get creative with Christmas for six months out of the year!
I eventually left Susan Crane, married, began a family, and began teaching school to fit more reasonably with my kids' needs. After having my third child, I quit teaching and started my tee shirt design business. I marketed original art tee shirts through the World Trade Center in Dallas for six years.
Throughout all of this time, I continued to paint portraits, landscapes, and do freelance graphic design and illustration. My website is www.maryjeter.com.
Today, after working in the corporate world for a few years, I find myself back at the art table doing what I love the most. Illustration. I am excited to be part of the SCBWI family!
