Elizabeth Wein

Bio:

I am the author of five YA novels set in Arthurian Britain and sixth century Ethiopia. My profile used to say that "my best-known books are probably The Winter Prince (Atheneum, 1993; Firebirds, 2003) and The Lion Hunter (Viking, 2007). The Lion Hunter was short-listed for the Andre Norton Award in 2008."

Code Name Verity (Egmont UK and Disney-Hyperion, 2012) changed all that for sure - it is far and away the most astonishing success story a writer could wish, having picked up six starred reviews on publication. It is a Printz Honor Book and a Boston Globe/Horn Book Award Honor Book; it won the Edgar Award for Best Mystery in the young adult category. It also became a New York Times best seller in 2013! While Code Name Verity is best described as “a World War II spies ’n’ pilots thriller,” at its core is the warm story of a devoted friendship between two young women fighting for Britain and the Allies.

My next book, Rose Under Fire (Egmont UK and Disney Hyperion 2013), follows chronologically from Code Name Verity, but features new characters and a different type of story.

I hold a private pilot’s license and am a member of the Ninety-Nines (the International Organization of Women Pilots) and Women in Aviation. It was partly my love of flying that inspired Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire.

I have been an SCBWI member since 1991. Although American by birth, I have lived in Scotland for the past thirteen years. My husband and I have two children.
