Bio:

I've always wanted to be a writer, and while I very much enjoyed teaching, I was proud to realize my dream when I graduated from Mills College in 2004 with an MFA in English and Creative Writing, and got my first contract with Knopf in 2007. A LA CARTE was my first book with Knopf, and MARE'S WAR is my second. MARE'S WAR is a Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People, 2010, a Coretta Scott King Honor Award book, as well as a Junior Library Guild selection and an Amelia Bloomer Award book.

HAPPY FAMILIES, May 2012, is my third book with Knopf Books for Young Readers.

I've just moved back to the US after living in Scotland for five years while my other half finished his PhD. I'm unbelievably torn -- homesick for Scotland, but excited and grateful for the good ole USA, warts and all.

I'd love to write science fiction someday or fantasy that isn't Eurocentric. I really love the old Arthurian legends, but there's no place for so many people there. Wouldn't it be great to write about knights and dragons where there were people with brown skin?

I'm represented by The Chudney Agency, New York. Steven Chudney is an amazingly nice guy.

...and that's it for me. I'd much prefer reading about other people than talking about myself!
