Paddy Bouma

Bio:

Paddy Bouma was trained as a painter and printmaker at the University of Cape Town and the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris which she attended with bursaries from the French Government and UCT.

She taught printmaking and Illustration at the Art School of University of Stellenbosch from 1971-2006 and has exhibited on numerous occasions.

Her illustrations for Louis Baum's Are we Nearly There (pub. Bodley Head, London 1986 and in the USA as One More Time, pub. Morrow) were shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal, 1986.

The Mouseboat,(pub. Tafelberg, Cape Town 2008) which she wrote and illustrated, was shortlisted for the M.E.R. Prize.

She recently illustrated the picture book version of Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom, pub. Macmillan Children's Books, London, 2009.

Besides picture books, of which of which she has written and/or illustrated more than twenty, she writes alternative comics which have been published in the ground-breaking SA comix magazine Bitterkomix.

She served as SCBWI Co-RA for South Africa 2002-2008.
