Bio:

JANICE & TOM SHEFELMAN
and their books

Janice Shefelman, daughter of a German professor and his wife, grew up in a university neighborhood of Dallas. Her father read to her from an early age, beginning a love affair with books that led to careers as teacher, librarian, and writer.
Tom Shefelman’s childhood home in Seattle was blessed with a library of beautifully illustrated classics. He knew the stories through the pictures before he read them. Tom was always drawing and cartooning. It became his ticket to social acceptance and good grades.
Books opened the door to a big world, giving them the desire to see it. After Janice married Tom, an architect as well as artist, they set out on a year’s journey around the world by freighter and lived several weeks in a Buddhist temple. This journey gave them an empathy for other cultures, which changed their lives forever.
They now live in Austin and work together to make books for children of all ages. Their books have won many awards including the New York Public Library Best Book for the Teen Age, Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List, Reading Rainbow Book, and Children’s Book Council Notable book.
