If my book has been entered into the Golden Kites do I have to enter it into the Crystal Kites?
Yes you do. The Golden Kites and the Crystal Kites Members Choice Awards are two separate awards.
What is PAL?
PAL stands for Published and Listed. Click here for more information including how to list the publisher if your publisher is not listed.
I have PAL membership status. Are my books eligible?
Once you have a PAL published book you are always a PAL member but not all books are eligible. Only books that are published by one of the PAL publishers are eligible for the award.
How do I know if my publisher is PAL?
A list of the current PAL publishers can be found on the drop-down list on your profile page:
Is a self published book eligible?
No these awards are only for PAL published books (even if the member has PAL status). Self-published books are eligible for the Golden Kite Awards.
How do I know if my book has been entered?
If you selected the submit for publication button when you nominated your book under the Manage My Profile tab then your title will be considered for entry. Please note all eligible titles must meet the criteria that are listed on the Crystal Kite Awards page. Please not that only the member (author or illustrator) who created the title can nominate the book for entry into the Crystal Kites.
Can I advise people to vote for my book?
No you can’t. Rule 8: No spamming, vote campaigning, or third-party marketing/campaigning for a members’ title(s) will be tolerated. Participation in such activity is grounds for immediate disqualification. Members are permitted to announce and promote the awards generally but they are not to solicit voting. For example, you can say "Don't forget to vote for the Crystal Kite Awards! but you can not say "Don't forget to vote for my book!. Regional Advisors are permitted to promote titles from creators within their region.
Can both the author and the illustrator nominate the book?
Yes, as long as they are current SCBWI members. If both members are in the same Division and appear in the nominating list their votes will be combined for determining Round 2 eligibility. If the creators are in separate Divisions they can each nominate the title in their Division.
Do both the author and illustrator have to enter the book?
You can only win if you have entered your book. If a book wins in which you were the illustorator or author but did not enter yourself, you will be mentioned but not officially recieve an award.
My name does not appear correctly on the voting page. Why does this happen?
The name that appears when voting is drawn from the Display Name field of your profile. Make sure that the Display Name field is the name you would like to see next to your book, usually the name under which you are published.
The book title does not appear correctly on the voting page. Why does this happen?
The book title that appears when voting is drawn from the data entered by the member for that title. Make sure that the correct title is inserted in the Published Title field under Manage My Profile. If you need to change the title edit the data.
My book does not appear on the voting page. Why does this happen?
This could be for a number of reasons including that it was not published in the appropriate year, the year details were entered incorrectly, it might be self published, or publisher information is entered incorrectly.
Do I have to nominate my book for the Crystal Kite Awards?
No. Entry to these awards is optional. You can still add your book data so that the details show up in your profile,
How do I register for the Crystal Kite Awards?
Nominate your title by completing the title data under the Publications menu under the Manage My Profile tab and selecting the Submit for publication button.
To get to your profile page: www.scbwi.org > login > manage my profile > publications
Enter the information for your book, upload a picture of the cover and DON'T forget to tick "Yes, I would like to submit this publication..." box. T hen click on the ADD button and you are entered.
I cannot access the manage My Profile page to nominate my books?
You need first to login to the scbwi.org site. If you can’t login then check that you are using the correct email address / password. If this is a problem contact a staff member at 323-782-1010
How do I change the image for my cover?
Go to your profile page. At the end of the page is the list of your titles then click on the Edit link. That will bring up the details of the book, and then you simply replace the existing image with the correct one.
How do I change the details of my book?
Go to your profile page. At the end of the page is the list of your registered titles. Choose the title to be edited and click on the Edit link. That will bring up the details of the book, and then you simply insert the correct details.
The cover image will not upload. What is the problem?
Please ensure that you have the image to upload in the correct format, (.jpg or .gif), that it is below 3MB and that there are no strange symbols in the image name (eg: symbols like “, ‘, or ,)
How can I check the details for the Crystal Kite awards?
Now that I have entered the details for my book do I need to send a hard copy of the book in to the SCBWI?
No. Once details are entered into your profile the books is entered.
I have entered my title twice. Is this a problem?
You should have just one listing for the title on your profile page. To correct this enter your profile page and then click on the Delete button to remove the title from the database. Remember to delete the title you do not want.
I have had more than one title published this year. Do I have to choose just one?
No. You can nominate all your titles.
What are the relevant dates for the Crystal Kite Awards?
Can you confirm that details of my title are entered?
When you entered details of your title into Manage My Profile you should have clicked YES to submit the title for the award. At any time you can login, then go to Manage My Profile page and access the publications tab. The list of titles that you have entered will appear at the bottom of the page. Click on the Edit link to adjust details or re-view the YES box.
When does voting open for the Crystal Kite Awards?
My book has been reprinted. Is it eligible for these awards?
No. The eligible books must be first run.
How do I vote in the Crystal Kite Awards?
- Log in at SCBWI.org using your email address and password
- Click on the "See what's going on in your region!" link on your Member Home Page.
- Click on the tab that says Crystal Kite."
- Browse through the nominated books and authors from your Regional Division and vote for the book of your choice.
- Note: This option is ONLY available during the voting period.
I am sure my book will be a PAL book but the publisher is not listed. How do I get my publisher listed?
Can all members vote in the Crystal kite Awards?
Yes they can.
How can I check to see if my title is registered?
To check if your titles are registered as the book is now already on your profile you need to login, go to Manage My Profile and then Publications and you will see your list of books appear at the bottom of the information. Click on Edit for the title you want to check and the data for your book should appear. At the bottom of the data (beneath the cover image) will appear.
