Don Freeman Grant
The 2012 Recipents are:
Don Freeman was a renowned illustrator and an early supporter of SCBWI. He established this award to help picture book artists further their training and work towards publication.
The continuation of the grant is made possible by a generous grant from Amazon.com as part of the SCBWI Work-In-Progress Grants.
Eligibility: This grant is available to members of the SCBWI who, as artists, seriously intend to make picture books their chief contribution to the field of children’s literature.
Grant Amounts: One grant of $2,000 will be awarded annually. One Runner-Up Grant of $500 will also be awarded. In any given year, the SCBWI reserves the right to withhold either or both of the grants for that year.
Requirements: Applicants will be required to submit artwork: either a rough book dummy accompanied by two finished illustrations (from the dummy) OR any ten finished illustrations suitable for picture book portfolio presentation. (It is fine for these ten images to be unrelated to each other) Artwork specifications are included with the application instructions. Please pay close attention to the guidelines, as this is the first year we are only accepting the submissions digitally.
Deadlines: Completed application and accompanying PDFs no earlier than March 1 and no later than March 31. Receipt of your application will be acknowledged within one week. The recipients of the grants will be announced in August.
By submitting an application:
You represent and warrant that all submitted work is original with you and does not infringe on the intellectual property rights of any third party. You acknowledge and understand that the material you are submitting may be similar to, or competitive with material that has or may come to SCBWI from other sources. You understand and agree that you shall not be entitled to any compensation because of any use of such other similar material and release SCBWI and all its employees, agents, judges, readers, assigns and principals from any such claims including copyright and breach of confidentiality on my behalf.
