THE SOCIETY OF CHILDREN’S BOOK WRITERS AND ILLUSTRATORS DECLARES THE WINNERS AND HONOREES OF THE 2013 GOLDEN KITE AWARDS AND SID FLEISHMAN HUMOR AWARD

The SCBWI is pleased to reveal the winners of the prestigious Golden Kite and Sid Fleishman Awards, given annually to children’s books published in the preceding year.

About the 2013 Golden Kite Award Recipients

The Golden Kite Fiction Award goes to The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook by Joanne Rocklin.   This uplifting middle grade novel focuses on a pre-teen sister and brother and their love for their sickly cat, Zook.

This year’s Nonfiction Award winner, Noah Webster and His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris, presents the biography of the man who spent twenty years developing the first 100 percent American dictionary.

Me and Momma and Big John, by Mara Rockliff is this year’s winner for Picture Book Text. It tells the fascinating story of the construction of Saint John’s Cathedral by its diverse stonecutters.

Lester’s Dreadful Sweaters, written and illustrated by K.G. Campbell, wins the Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration. It’s a quirky tale in which Lester’s good manners are tested by his Cousin Clara’s unwanted, homemade gifts.

About the 2013 Honor Book Recipients

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein receives the Honor Book Award for Fiction.  A British spy plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France in this tense survival thriller.

The Honor Book Award for Nonfiction goes to Electric Ben by Robert Byrd.  Byrd depicts Benjamin Franklin's numerous and history-making accomplishments.

This year’s Honor Book for Picture Book Illustration goes to We’ve Got a Job by Cynthia Levinson, which chronicles the events before, during, and after the Children s March in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963.

The Picture Book Text Honor Book Award goes to A Leaf Can Be… by Laura Salas Purdie, a poetic look at the many roles leaves play throughout the year.

The Sid Fleischman Award for Humor

Named for the late Newbery-winner Sid Fleischman, the SCBWI is pleased to offer this eponymous award to authors whose work exemplifies excellence in the genre of humor, a category so often overlooked by other

award committees in children’s literature.

The 2013 Sid Fleischman Award for Humor goes to Mo Willem’s Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs, a hilarious twist on a classic fable.

About the Golden Kite Award

The Golden Kite Awards, given annually to recognize excellence in children’s literature in the previous calendar year by an SCBWI member, grant cash prizes of $2,500 to author and illustrator winners in four categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Picture Book Text, and Picture Book Illustration. The Golden Kite Awards and the Sid Fleischman Award for Humor will be presented to the winners at the Golden Kite Luncheon during SCBWI’s 42nd Annual Conference on Writing and Illustrating for Children, taking place in Los Angeles, California from August 2-5, 2013.  An Honor Book plaque is also awarded in each category. A list of previous Golden Kite Award winners and Honor Books is available on the SCBWI’s website: www.scbwi.org.
