LET'S MAKE A COVER
This intensive will include presentations and demos about character design and composition that will culminate in a work session in which each attendee creates a tight sketch for a kid's book cover, with Adam Rex serving as art director.
ABOUT ADAM REX
Adam Rex is a fine artist, a children’s book illustrator and a children’s book author. He grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and attended the University of Arizona where he earned a BFA. His first picture book, THE DIRTY COWBOY by Amy Timberlake, was published by Farrar, Straus Giroux in 2003. In 2005, Adam received the Jack Gaughan Award for Best Emerging Artist. He went on to write and illustrate numerous picture books including TREE RING CIRCUS (Harcourt Children’s Books 2006); FRANKENSTEIN MAKES A SANDWICH (Harcourt Children’s Books, 2006) a New York Times Bestseller; Pssstt (Harcourt Children’s Books, 2007); and FRANKENSTEIN TAKES THE CAKE (Harcourt Children’s Books, 2008). Adam has also illustrated books written by Mac Barnett, including CHLOE AND THE LION (Hyperion 2012); IT HAPPENED ON A TRAIN (Simon and Schuster 2011; THE GHOSTWRITER SECRET (Simon and Schuster 2010); BILLY TWITTERS AND HIS BLUE WHALE PROBLEM (Hyperion 2009 ); (THE CASE OF THE CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY (Simon and Schuster 2009) ; and GUESS AGAIN! (Simon and Schuster 2009). Adam’s first novel that features his own cover art and interior illustrations) was THE TRUE MEANING OF SMEKDAY (Hyperion 2007). He followed that with FAT VAMPIRE (Balzer and Bray 2010) a book for teens and adults, and more currently, he published an illustrated novel, COLD CEREAL (Balzer and Bray 2012), the first in a trilogy. Adam lives in Tucson, where he draws, paints, and writes. He has been a presenter at the Tucson Festival of books, the Illustration Master Class at Amherst College, the 2008 SCBWI Summer Conference, and the 2011 SCBWI Rocky Mountain Conference, among others
This event is for published, seasoned, and aspiring children’s book illustrators.
ASSIGNMENT TO DO BEFORE CLASS
*One initial cover sketch (can be a little rough) for either of two books: THE BORROWERS by Mary Norton, or CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY by Roald Dahl. Also bring any **reference material you believe you'll need, up to and including models, objects, and photographs. Participants are also encouraged to bring some means of taking digital pictures (***phone, camera, Photo Booth app) of fellow attendees for photographic reference.
