Winner of the 2012 SCBWI Portfolio Award
Let's toot some horns and throw some confetti.Let us celebrate the news that our very own Juana Martinez-Neal has won the 2012 SCBWI Portfolio Award for best portfolio on view in the Juried Art Portfolio Display at the SCBWI Summer Conference in Los Angeles. Juana will be given an all expense-paid trip to New York to meet with interested art directors.
Last year, at the 40th Anniversary SCBWI Summer Conference in Los Angeles, Juana was one of several artists to be selected for the SCBWI Illustrator Mentorship Program. This award was presented to illustrators who participated in the annual SCBWI Portfolio Showcase and whose publishable work showed great promise and potential. The purpose of the award goes beyond the selection in that the Mentorship Program is an intense advance-level portfolio critique that includes both individual reviews with each Mentor and a culminating critique peer meeting with the mentors and mentees. This in itself was quite an honor for Juana. But Juana went on to apply what she learned and produced an outstanding portfolio that earned her the title of 2012 Portfolio Award winner. With that said, it is important to note that the judges for the Mentorship Program do not judge the Juried Portfolio Competition. It was a completely different panel of judges who choose Juana this year.
I'd also like to note that over the years Juana has given many hours to help SCBWI Arizona grow and look good and we proudly use the beautiful logo she created especially for our region.
