About Judith:
I first realized I was destined to be a writer in about the third grade. I loved the challenge (and the deadline!) of being assigned to write a story or a poem using all 20 of our weekly spelling words. To this day, I am drawn to entering writing contests for the same reasons, the challenge and the deadline.
In junior high I worked on the school newspaper, and in high school was a member of the yearbook staff. After reading IN COLD BLOOD by Truman Capote as a sophomore in high school, I decided I wanted to enter the medical profession. But after earning less than stellar grades in my science classes in college, I eventually found my way to the English department where I belonged.
Many years later, after marriage and four children, I learned about the MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program being offered by Vermont College. Even though it was hard to tear myself away from my four young children in order to attend the 12-day residencies, once there I finally knew I had finally found my village.
As a result of the MFA program, my first middle grade novel, WHILE YOU WERE OUT was accepted for publication by Dutton, and another middle grade novel, PURGATORY BINGO was awarded the Marguerite de Angeli prize, sponsored by Delacorte. Since then I have written two other middle grade novels, ORANGE AROUND THE EDGES and THE FAMILY OF THINGS, which I plan on submitting in 2013. I have also had several short stories published in Children's Digest, Jack and Jill and Humpty Dumpty Magazines.
