What makes a middle-grade novel both literary and commercial? How can a writer hit that sweet spot? Those questions and many others will be explored by author-editor Kristin Ostby.

So what do best-selling titles from the likes of Rick Riordan, James Patterson, Jeff Kinney, and Mike Lupica have in common? Why do boys like them? And is it true that a female protagonist is a turnoff for middle-grade boy readers? The topic of middle-grade fiction for boys will be explored in depth in this session.

Picture books consist of two parts, the text and the illustrations, both are equally important and dependent on each other. What makes a successful marriage between the two?
