Guest Speaker and Topic:

Guest Speaker:
Lisa Nowak, author

The SCBWI Oregon summer picnic provides a casual atmosphere to network with others who share a passion for children's books and the opportunity to learn from experienced members of our creative community. This year's theme, "How to Determine the Publishing Path That's Right for You," features Oregon author and indie publisher, Lisa Nowak.

In addition to being a YA author, Lisa is a retired amateur stock car racer, an accomplished cat whisperer, and by her own admission, a professional smartass. She writes coming-of-age books about kids in hard luck situations who learn to appreciate their own value after finding mentors who love them for who they are. In 2009 Lisa won the Kay Snow award for juvenile fiction. She enjoys dark chocolate and stout beer and constantly works toward employing wei wu wei in her life, all the while realizing that the struggle itself is an oxymoron. To learn more about Lisa and her books, visit her blog at http://lisanowak.wordpress.com/

What can you expect to learn if you attend the picnic? Lisa will share how she identified the publishing path that was right for her and what she discovered along the way. Participants will hear the latest about new and traditional publishing models, and gain an understanding of what opportunities are best suited for different writers and illustrators based on personal and professional goals, interests, and skills.

In addition to Lisa's talk, there will also be plenty of time for networking with others about our topic. What tips can you share about different publishing models? What words of advice do you have for authors or illustrators who want to get published/re-published? What resources (books, websites, blogs, people) do you turn to for information about publishers and/or getting published? Plan to share at least one idea of your own and leave with many ideas from others!

For the "picnic" part of our day, bring a sack lunch and a beverage. There is a lovely green space surrounding our facility where participants can share lunch and continue the conversation. There is also a big fountain nearby, so bring a towel and something you don't mind getting wet if you'd like to run through the water with the neighborhood kids!

Cost: none
There is no registration fee for this event. Our room will hold about 50 people.

For planning purposes, let us know you are coming if you can. RSVP to Sara Behrman at sbehrman@easystreet.net or call 503-245-2528.
