GOOD NEWS
We are pleased to announce that every finalist in the children's and YA categories for the Colorado book award is a member of SCBWI! Winners will be announced in June.

Two finalists for the Colorado Authors' League Book Awards for Book-length Fiction Middle Grade/Young Adult are also RMC-SCBWI members: KISSING SHAKESPEARE by Pamela Mingle and ROCK ON by Denise Vega.

Hazel Krantz’s middle grade historical novel set in 1050AD, the Golden Age of Spain, IN THE GARDEN OF CALIPH (Tattord: Penguin), is now available.
 
Claudia Mills has two new books coming out in June from Farrar, Straus & Girouz: KELSEY GREEN, READING QUEEN (first title in the Franklin School Friends chapter book series) and ZERO TOLERANCE (a seventh-grade girl faces mandatory expulsion for a knife brought to school in the wrong lunch).                               
                                                                         
 
Nancy Oswald announces the paperback version of her historical novel NOTHING HERE BUT STONES by Filter Press Books. NOTHING HERE BUT STONES won a Willa Award and was named a Notable Book for a Global Society.  It is based on the Jewish Colony of Cotopaxi Colorado in the early 1880’s.

Kim Tomsic's picture book, THE ELEPHANTS CAME, about the friendship between a herd of elephants and the man who adopted them was sold to Melissa Manlove at Chronicle Children's, for publication in 2015, by Jennifer Rofe at the Andrea Brown Literary Agency (world).

Todd Tuell is happy to announce his debut picture book has been sold to Cecily Kaiser of Abrams Appleseed by Rubin Pfeffer of East West Literary Agency.  NINJA NINJA NEVER STOP, a humorous ode to the household stalking, sneaking, and scheming of a young ninja, is scheduled for a Spring 2014 release.

Mary Louise Sanchez was one of three recipients at the 2013 SCBWI winter conference for the inaugural On-the-Verge Emerging Voices Award. The award promotes publication for authors of underrepresented cultures and ethnic groups.

Andariego Books has just published FOXY COMES HOME, a beautifully illustrated picture book for children aged three to twelve by Ashley Bridges. FOXY tells the story of a small dog who becomes lost during a terrifying thunderstorm and how she meets Lin, a young girl who was adopted from a different culture.



Anna-Maria Crum's (illustrator) latest picture book, TALLIE'S CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SURPRISE!, was released on September 15th, by the Pelican Publishing Company. It's a fun holiday whodunit for kids.



Anna-Maria Crum's new app, ALIEN OLYMPICS (published August 2012), is listed as one of the top three highest rated apps on the Interactive Touch Books website.



Julie Hedlund is pleased to announce that her book, A TROOP IS A GROUP OF MONKEYS, will be published as an interactive iPad app by Little Bahalia Publishing in December, 2012. In rhyming couplets, TROOP reveals collective nouns for animals and a fact about each animal's behavior or habitat.



Teresa Travous Hull's first published book, LOVE'S COMPLETE: A RUSSIAN ADOPTION JOURNEY was published on August 20, 2012 by Westbow Press. The illustrated children's book written in rhyme paints the journey adoptive families go through in order to bring their Russian children home.



Frances Bonney Jenner's debut novel, PRAIRIE JOURNEY, was published by Irie Books on September 12, 2012. A middle-grade historical novel set in 1850, it tells the tale of young Savannah who struggles to survive the perils of the trail going west, only to discover an unexpected gift that changes everything.



Vivian Kirkfield, author of SHOW ME HOW! BUILD YOUR CHILD'S SELF-ESTEEM THROUGH READING, CRAFTING AND COOKING, has been invited to speak at the 2013 Asian Children's Writers and Illustrators Conference (part of the 3rd annual Asian Festival of Children's Content) in Singapore.



Donald Samson's fourth book, AT THE HOT GATES: AN ACCOUNT OF THE BATTLE OF THERMOPYLAE was published by AWSNA Publications in September 2012. This historical fiction classroom reader, told from the point of view of a twelve year old, is a first hand account of the famed battle between 300 Spartans and the invading army of the Persians.



Jennifer Turner's book, MY NAME IS JAKE, was published in July by Peaks Press. It is available in both paperback and ebook on Amazon. This colorfully illustrated, rhyming picture book is for ages 2 and up.

Sean Vogel’s CELTIC RUN (MB Publishing, May 2012), won Dan Poynter’s 2012 Global Ebook Award for Children’s Literature. CELTIC RUN features Jake McGreevy, a 14-year-old gadget whiz, who teams up with Zach, the class bully, in a clue-hunting chase across the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland in this coming-of-age novel.

GOOD NEWS
Marty Mokler Banks has just published THE ADVENTURES OF TEMPEST & SERENA in both paperback and as an ebook.  She heeded the sage advice of another RMC-SCBWI member, Anne MacFarlane, and used Amazon's CreateSpace self-publishing service.  This suspenseful yet charming chapter book is for ages 7 and up.

Erin S. Gray’s book, MOONSHINE MURDER, will be published in September 2012 by Treble Heart Books.

Darby Karchut’s article “Boys and Books and Brown-paper Bags: Getting Boys into Middle School Books Clubs” appeared in the June 2012 issue of VOYA Magazine. Darby Karchut is the author of GRIFFIN RISING and GRIFFIN’S FIRE (both from Twilight Times Books) and FINN FINNEGAN (March 2013 from Spencer Hill Press).

Darby Karchut’s novel, GRIFFIN’S FIRE (Twilight Times Books, April 2012), is a finalist for the 2012 Readers Favorite Award (YA category). GRIFFIN’S FIRE is the sequel to the award-winning GRIFFIN RISING (Twilight Times Books, 2011).

Claudia Cangilla McAdam's newest book is A, B, SEE COLORADO  AN ALPHABET BOOK OF THE CENTENNIAL STATE (John Fielder Publishing, August, 2012), her third collaboration with photographer Fielder.  The book features an intro by Gov. John Hickenlooper, 26 nature photos with verse arranged A-Z, map, glossary, and suggested learning activities.

Eighteen year old debut author Stefan Bachmann's THE PECULIAR releases from HarperCollins on September 18, 2012. It has been honored with a starred review by Publishers Weekly and New York Times bestselling author Christopher Paolini says, "Bachmann’s prose is beautiful, and his story is swift, strong, and entertaining. Highly recommended." Bachmann is originally from Colorado, now lives in Zurich, Switzerland and is represented by local literary agent Sara Megibow of Nelson Literary Agency.

Jeannie Mobley's debut novel, KATERINA'S WISH was published by Margaret K. McElderry Books (Simon and Schuster) August 28th. A middle-grade historical novel set in early 20th century Colorado, it has received starred reviews from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly, and has made the Kids Indie Next List for Fall 2012.

Karla Oceanak’s book FINICKY, the 6th title in the alphabetical Aldo Zelnick Comic Novel Series, will be published in September by Bailiwick Press.

Kathleen T. Pelley is pleased to announce that her picture book, RAJ THE BOOKSTORE TIGER, Charlesbridge 2011 won the Colorado Authors' League Award in Children's fiction, was selected as a Bank Street Best Book, is a nominee for the Cardozo Award in children's fiction, and it was also released in paperback in July 2012.

Jean Reidy's picture book LIGHT UP THE NIGHT (Disney Hyperion - Illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Margaret Chodos-Irvine) has been selected by the Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington D.C. to represent Colorado this year in the Pavilions of the States.

Judith Robbins Rose has signed with Sheldon Fogelman Agency in Manhattan, the first agency to specialize in children’s books. Sean McCarthy is working on final editing suggestions for Judy’s MG novel MISS, as she begins work on a YA novel, BURN, with writing coach Lori DeBoer of Boulder Writers Workshop.

GOOD NEWS

Sherry Ficklin and Tyler Jolley's YA steampunk novel EXTRACTED (The Lost Imperials, Book 1), in which two siblings, unknowingly stolen from history, fight on opposing sides of a battle to control time and space, was sold to Kate Kaynak at Spencer Hill Press, in a nice deal, for publication in November 2013.

Twice each month
Diane Kress Hower is sharing Colorado authors and illustrator's books on TV with KKCO, News 11, Morning Show Book Talks and Blog review. She is taking submissions from all RMC/SCBWI members. Nancy Lee Mervar published her second book, Bully Goat to the Rescue, with the help of third to fifth grade students in local schools. During the last month, Dr. Mervar re-visited each of these schools so that students could see their finished product and recognize the value of the revision process.

Karla Oceanak’s book EGGHEAD, the 5th title in the alphabetical Aldo Zelnick Comic Novel Series, was published in May by Bailiwick Press. The series’ DIY art-o-biography journal, also by Oceanak, publishes in June.

Nancy Oswald’s middle grade historical fiction novel, RESCUE IN POVERTY GULCH, received First Place for the EVVY Awards sponsored the Colorado Independent Publisher’s Association (CIPA). The same book received a Spur Finalist Award from Western Writers of America, and has been nominated for a Colorado Book Award. Filter Press Books, 2011.

Jean Reidy's picture book LIGHT UP THE NIGHT illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Margaret Chodos-Irvine (Disney Hyperion, 2011) was selected as afinalist for the Colorado Book Award, The Crystal Kite Member Choice Award and The Colorado Authors' League Award.

THE QUEEN OF WATER (Delacorte, 2011), by

Amy Kathleen Ryan is delighted to announce that book two in her SKY CHASERS series, SPARK, will be released July 17, 2012 by St. Martin's Press. Early ARC reviews agree that SPARK outshines GLOW, the first book, which was chosen by SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL as a Best Book of 2011.

Todd Tuell has recently relaunched his book blog at www.Books4Boyz.org. The site offers thoughts and resources to help parents and educators of and writers for boys to encourage young men to become avid, life-long readers.
