Join award-winning author, teacher, and literacy advocate Guadalupe Garcia McCall for a glimpse into the future of the American youth readership and the ever-growing need for cultural diversity in the themes and characters of children’s literature. Learn how you, as writers and illustrators, can play an integral role in community literacy efforts, including El día de los niños / El día de los libros, an annual celebration of children and reading that culminates on April 30.
McCall will follow her presentation with a book signing.

About the Speaker
Guadalupe Garcia McCall was born in Mexico and moved to Texas as a young girl, keeping close ties with family on both sides of the border. Trained in Theater Arts and English, she now teaches English/Language Arts at a junior high school. Her poems for adults have appeared in more than twenty literary journals. McCall won the American Library Association's 2012 Pura Belpré Author Award for her debut novel Under the Mesquite, which was also a finalist for the 2012 William C. Morris YA Debut Award. Kirkus Reviews named Under the Mequite one of the Best Teen Books of 2011.

Open Critique Groups
Our chapter offers open critique groups to writers and illustrators attending meetings. Whenever we have a free Saturday morning chapter meeting, we’ll offer open critique groups during the second hour (11 am - 12 pm).
To participate in open critique groups, bring up to 5 pages of critique-ready work (4 copies) to share. In accordance with SCBWI critique guidelines, another critique will read your pages aloud, giving you the opportunity to listen to your prose or verse in action — a great test of readability. Bring fiction, nonfiction, illustration, poetry, synopses, query letters, or any other children's literature work you'd like to get feedback on.
