The authors of fantasy, science-fiction, historical fiction, paranormal romance, and even some contemporary stories need convincing worlds—not just for setting, but for rich characters and believable plot points. We’ll explore how to create and people the universe of your story for young readers, including discussion of industry expectations related to age categories, genres, and market segments. We’ll also practice with tools that can help you unearth and flesh out the submerged reality your story needs to bring authenticity to your fiction.
Joni Sensel is the author of five novels for young readers, two clandestine picture books, and several nonfiction books for adults. THE FARWALKER’S QUEST, the first book of her Farwalker Trilogy, is her best-known work for kids. Her fiction has been praised as a Junior Library Guild Selection, a Bank Street College of Education “Best Book,” a Cybils Award and Crystal Kite Award finalist, a Truman Award short-listed title, and a Henry Bergh Honor winner. She is a former co-regional advisor for the Western Washington chapter of the Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators, and she lives at the knees of Mt. Rainier in Washington state.
