| The SCBWI presents five types of annual awards: the Golden Kite Awards, the Sid Fleischman Humor Award, the Magazine Merit Awards, the Sue Alexander Most Promising New Work Award, and the Portfolio Award. The Golden Kite Award, first given in 1973, is the only major children's book award presented by one's peers, and, therefore, is one of the most respected and coveted honors in the field. The Sid Fleischman Humor Award is presented to authors whose work exemplifies the excellence of writing in the genre of humor. Magazine Merit Awards are presented for outstanding original magazine work for young people published during that year. The Sue Alexander Most Promising New Work Award, named for author and SCBWI Board Member Sue Alexander, is presented to the best manuscript submitted for individual critique at the Los Angeles Annual Conference. Also presented at the Los Angeles Annual Conference, the Portfolio Award is presented to the best art portfolio on view at the Juried Portfolio Display. All SCBWI Awards are given to works that exhibit excellence in writing or illustration, and genuinely appeal to the interests and concerns of children. |

| To
encourage continuing excellence in the creation of childrens literature,
the Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators has instituted
grant programs. An important function of the SCBWI is providing assistance
and support to those working in the childrens book field; therefore,
we are pleased to be able to offer the following grants to our membership: The General Work-In-Progress Grant is funded by the SCBWI and Dorothy Francis. The Work-In-Progress Grant for a Contemporary Novel for Young People is funded by the SCBWI and Judy Blume. The Work-In-Progress Nonfiction Research Grant is funded by the SCBWI and James Cross Giblin, in memory of his mother, Anna Cross Giblin. The Work-In-Progress Grant for a Work Whose Author Has Never Had a Book Published is funded entirely by the SCBWI. The Don Freeman Memorial Grant-In-Aid, the Barbara Karlin Grant, the Martha Weston Grant, and the Kimberly Colen Memorial Grant are funded by the SCBWI and outside donations. Please note: members may apply for only one grant per calendar year. The principal recipient of any SCBWI grant will no longer be eligible to apply for any current or future SCBWI grants. For more information about a specific grant, choose from the menu to the left. Click here for a list of previous Grant Winners and Runners-up. |
