THE BARBARA KARLIN GRANT
The Barbara Karlin Grant has been established to recognize and encourage the work of aspiring picture-book writers.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Grant is available to both full and associate members of the SCBWI who have never had a picture book published and do not have a picture book currently under contract. Please note: members may a
pply for only one SCBWI grant per calendar year.

GRANT AMOUNT:

One grant in the amount of $1,500 will be awarded annually. A runner-up grant, in the amount of $500 will also be awarded. The SCBWI Grant Committee reserves the right to withhold either or both of the grants in any given year.

USE OF GRANT MONEY:

Acceptable uses of the Grant money are: attendance at writing courses, conferences or workshops; child care; rental of work space; supplemental basic support; other items deemed necessary to further the work of the writer.

DESCRIPTION:
One picture-book manuscript per applicant should be submitted. The text may be an original story, work of non-fiction, or a re-telling or adaptation of a fairytale, folktale or legend.

PROCEDURES:

Complete 6 copies of the Grant Application. Follow the directions below carefully.


  1) Prepare 6 clearly reproduced copies of the picture-book manuscript, which may be no longer than eight typed double-spaced manuscript pages with adequate margins. Only text is acceptable. Picture book dummies or manuscripts accompanied by illustrations are NOT acceptable.

2) Do not include cover letters or title pages.

3) Emails and faxes will not be accepted.

4) Your name, as listed by the SCBWI, must be the one used on the application form and must appear on the first page of the picture-book manuscript. (We need to be able to verify your membership, so double check your membership card or email SCBWI Membership if you're not sure how we have you listed.)

5) Each set of material must be collated -- with the application on top -- and stapled.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THESE PROCEDURES BE FOLLOWED CAREFULLY;
ENTRIES NOT IN COMPLIANCE MAY BE DECLARED INELIGIBLE.

DEADLINE:

Completed application and accompanying materials must be postmarked no earlier than February 15th and must be received no later than March 15th. Receipt of your application will be acknowledged only if a stamped self-addressed post card is enclosed.
The recipients will be announced in the Bulletin and posted online at www.scbwi.org. Submitted materials will not be returned.
