Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
THE DON FREEMAN MEMORIAL GRANT-IN-AID

The Don Freeman Memorial Grant-In-Aid has been established by the SCBWI to enable picture-book artists to further their understanding, training, and work in the picture-book genre.

ELIGIBILITY:
This Grant is available to both full and associate members of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators who, as artists, seriously intend to make picture-books their chief contribution to the field of children's literature. Please note that members can apply for only one SCBWI grant in a given year.

GRANT AMOUNTS:
One Grant of $1,500 will be awarded annually. One Runner-up Grant of $500 will also be awarded. The SCBWI Grant Committee reserves the right to withhold either or both grants for any given year.

USE OF GRANT MONEY:
The purchase of necessary materials, enrollment in illustrators' or writers' workshops or conferences, courses in advanced illustrating or writing techniques, travel for research or to expose work to publishers/art directors are some of the ways the Grant-In-Aid money may be used.

PROCEDURES:
You may choose to submit either A or B as listed below. In either, originality is an important component.

(A) A rough picture-book dummy, the picture-book text in manuscript form, and two finished illustrations -- one color and one black & white. The dummy should show your ability to convey the mood of the story, show action, illuminate characterization, and indicate an understanding of story pacing.

(B) Ten finished illustrations, no larger than 8 1/2 x 11 inches, that would make a suitable portfolio presentation expressly intended for picture-books. Some black & white illustrations and some illustrations in color should be included. A variety of techniques and media is advisable. To demonstrate the range of your ability, we ask that the submitted illustrations consist of:

Three drawings of people (men, women, children of all ages).
One drawing of animals - either realistic or anthropomorphic.
Three scenes showing either the same people or the same animals in action.
One urban scene.
One pastoral scene.
One drawing from your imagination.

DO NOT send original artwork.

Original art will NOT be accepted and will be returned unjudged.
Only quality reproductions may be submitted -- this is for your own benefit.
Slides cannot be accepted.

The above materials must be able to be enclosed in an envelope no larger than 12" x 15.5".
Be sure to reinforce with cardboard to avoid damage or bending. Mark on the envelope:

ARTWORK -- PLEASE DO NOT BEND

It is essential that these procedures be followed carefully.
Entries out of compliance may not be considered.
