I've been told that Junior Literary Guild is taking more than 3,000 copies of my octopus book (due out in the fall).

I know it's good news, but I'm not sure what it means exactly. Can someone tell me? Thanks.

Congrats Betsy! I haven't had a book in the JLG, but it's a very good thing as its well known and prestigious, and will surely result in more sales  :goldstar

Thanks, Dianna. I've never had a book with them either. Do you know who they are? And why are they honoring the book long before it's out? Seems odd...(not that I'm complaining--I'm really quite thrilled).

I'm not too sure myself, Betsy. But here's an interesting link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Library_Guild I know some here on the board have had books selected so maybe they'll chime in as well.  :goldstar

Betsy, I'm new to this (as a Sixteen debut), but a couple of the other Sixteeners were JLG selections and their editors were thrilled. My understanding is that it gives you 1) prestige and 2) more book sales--I think in the school/library market :eh2

Guess this isn't a terribly helpful post--but congratulations!

Ellen, if you were asking what it means in terms of royalties, it may not be much. Book clubs pay the publisher much less per copy than a bookstore does. But JLG selection is considered an honor, and if a book they've selected receives other honors (starred reviews, awards, etc.) they'll tweet about it. They may also order more copies after their initial order. And they send you a nice certificate and pin.  ::-)

Thanks Mara and Melissa. I never know which of my books are going to get awards and which are going to be ignored. Some of the ones I liked the best never won anything.

Ellen, JLG "honors" the book before its out because it's essentially a book club for small libraries, a way for them to find the best books without dedicating staff time to making choices.

It's good because it's early recognition and will earn the book more attention, though I don't think it influences reviewers, necessarily.

JLG selects books early on instead of doing what Scholastic does because they typically join the print run of the hardcover edition, and print their edition as part of it (so it ends up looking virtually identical).

You'll get to split a fairly modest royalty payment with your publisher, and that's good too!

Congratulations, Betsy!  :yay You mean, Junior "Library" Guild, right?

One of my books is a selection, too. Certainly sounds like a good thing!

It's very good news. As I understand it, the 3,000 is guaranteed, as in, they won't be returned. That's unlike bookstore sales which might come right on back to you. Ada was in the spring catalog, so I haven't yet seen what it means in terms of royalties, but since these are all sales which might never have happened, it's definitely a goodness.
