Sharpen your pencils, folks. Pockets annual fiction contest opens March 15, 2016. From their website, "The rules and final deadline (August 15) will be the same as for our previous contests."

Thanks, but I don't know if I'm going to try it this year because It does get frustrating getting things back in the mail.

I hear ya, onestepp. This is the way I look at it: if I don't win, at least I've written a piece I can sub elsewhere, so it's not time wasted.

They might buy non-winners, too. That happened to me one year. :)

Mama's New Do, November 2015
The Repurposed Stories of a Buzzard's Son, TBA
Mayflower Marsh, TBA

Other than their normal submission guidelines, is there a theme or any other direction for this contest? Simply a fiction story of any kind?

Yes, it's general - no set theme (with their usual 750-1,000 word count). I did check upcoming themes to see what they might be particularly keen to receiving, but only found their upcoming December "God's Gift of Love" topic listed (and the deadline for submitting for that issue is 5-1-16).

Best wishes to everyone!!!

Found this on Pockets website. Congratulations to the winner!

"Thanks to all the wonderful writers who entered the 2016 Pockets Fiction-Writing Contest! The winner of this year’s contest is Christine Venzon of Peoria, IL. Her story “Special Invitation” will appear in a future issue of Pockets. In addition to the winning story, 13 other manuscripts are being held for further consideration. Those authors should receive notification by December 1. Contest entries that were accompanied by SASE’s will be returned. We are not able to return manuscripts that were not accompanied by SASE’s.

We will begin receiving entries for the 2017 contest on March 15, 2017. The rules and final deadline (August 15) will be the same as for our previous contests."

Has anyone heard anything back from Pockets on their manuscripts? I haven't gotten my manuscript back or been notified that it was on hold. Maybe it got lost in the mail?

I've seen the Pockets Contest for 2017 is about to accept stories(March 15).  Does anyone know the rules - word count for the stories they accept because all this is posted is the same as last year, and I don't remember the word count of length of stories they accept?  Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Onestep,

I think the rules are the same as for general submissions, in terms of word count and subject matter. There's no set theme, though.

This might help: http://www.upperroom.org/about/writer-guidelines/pockets

I noticed the post read 2016. Is this taking place right now, 2017???
#25 - March 20, 2017, 06:57 AM

As far as I know, the Christian magazine, 'Pockets'  has a contest every year.  They accept submissions from March until mid August.
