Twitter

Discussion started on

Social networking ahoy!  Anybody got one?  I have only the vaguest idea of what I'm doing, but I'm always up for following people.  List your twitter names here!

And if you don't have one, probably you should get one.  It's what all the cool kids are doing.  ;)

Here's mine:

... And it probably helps to know what Twitter is for those that don't.  Whoops.  From the FAQ:

"Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?  Bloggers can use it as a mini-blogging tool. [...]  Tell us what you're doing in 140 characters or less!  Send your thoughts, observations, and goings-on in your day. Whether you're "eating an apple" or "looking foward to the weekend" or "Heading out of town" it's twitter-worthy. [...] Find out what your friends are doing; keep each other abreast of your quotidian rituals."

It's fun.

Oh man, I'm still taking crap for not having a Myspace or Facebook page.
But at least I know what Twitter is.
I just heard about the guy who was laid off from Yahoo, and Twittered about his last day- he got a lot of job offers!

I must have been watching the same show!  I also heard about the guy from Yahoo.  I hadn't heard of twitter before I heard that story.  Geesh - I can't hardly keep up with all of this stuff.  twitter, facebook, blogspot, livejournal, etc.  It makes my head  :stars.  I guess I better start checking some of this stuff out.  Of course, my favorite networking group is ... all of YOU - right here on this board!  Thanks, Verla!

OK, I'm not sure I'll keep it up so if my account disappears in a few days, nobody be insulted. But status updates are my favourite part of Facebook, so what the heck.

I signed up for Twitter several months ago and keep forgetting about it. I just don't have enough time in the day for it all. That's why I'm so sporatic on this board.

That's funny. I signed up today because a friend sent me an email, but I have no idea why.  :crazy

I'm on it, but have let it slide for weeks. The Day-by-Day post on this board serves the same "stay on task" function for me.

The people who have asked to follow me, apparently clicking onto me from the one person I am following, have been either functionally illiterate (or exceptionally bad typists) or are hustling me to join their cause/buy their product/add one more "friend."

I'll follow this thread for a while and see how it works for you.

I was bullied and peer-pressured into joining twitter.  :ahh I won't expose the person responsible because that would be like letting them win. All over again...

*cough*courtneysummers*cough**cough*

But seriously, Twitter is oddly addictive. I agree - status updates are the best part about Facebook/Myspace (maybe because they're the easiest?) And besides that, I need followers/followees to boost my ego because of course it validates my soul. So without further ado about nothing...

Bumping this topic.

I've just got to say there is a definite value in having a Twitter Account.  I've had my blog on hiatus for the last three weeks as I attempt to finish my novel, but I've directed my friends and readers to my twitter account, which I keep active.  This lets people know what's going on with me and I can still attempt to have fun and make people laugh (in 140 characters or less), while my blog is quiet.  It minimizes my absence and takes some of the pressure of maintaining my online presence when I've got some pressing things going on (composing a blog entry can take some time, for example, whereas twitter is super instant).  It also keeps me in contact with my friends, which is a definite plus, esp. when I'm lagging on email replies etc.

One of the EASIEST ways to lose an audience is by not updating (in the earlier days of my blog, my stats showed that lags between updates did cost me readers and it took them a while to want to catch back up with me again), no matter how good your reasons might be.  Twitter is a social network that minimizes the fuss and it's just fun and personal and great and EASY.

So far I've seen agents with twitters, book reviewers with twitter, authors with twitter, publishers with twitter.  Get onto this one (it's fun as heck) and don't let it languish if you do.  It's got a lot of potential for someone interested in being out there.

I started one up a few weeks ago (deirdremundy)!

I use it to keep up my todo list, set my goals for the day, etc....

It is A LOT easier than blogging... much less time-consuming.

Though the coolest thing so far has been looking up long-lost friends and acquaintances to see if THEY have accounts. I found out my first BF and his wife just had THEIR first child! (He twittered the birth date and time! =)  )

BTW-- Courtney-- I started following you, but then stopped because you had too many updates and I lost my todo list from last week! :ohno

So I guess I'd better not follow anyone until I have serious social networking time!

I'm starting to kind of get it too. At first I was like "do I really want people to know my every move? Then I subscribed to some publishing house twitters and such - people are using it to point readers to their latest blog posts,et. That makes it a pretty nice little marketing tool.

I really don't get how Twitter works. But I did sign up (only to find they cut off the last two letters of my name...oh well).

So I'm on Twitter as www.twitter.com/lindajoysinglet

Now what do I do?

Linda,
I can't find you, but I'm new at this too. As far as what to do, you can choose to "follow people" and others will follow you, meaning they can read yout little updates that you post. I have my updates protested which means I have to approve people before they can read my posts. It's similar to friending I gather, and I'm being cautious until I learn how this works. If I recognize the name, I approve the request to be followed. My that sounds strange. I'd follow you but I can't find you...yet. Anyone else have trouble finding Linda?

I can find me...but don't like my name being shortened. If I can figure this out, I may redo it under LindaJSingleton like I do at livejournal.

Not sure how exciting it will be to post everyday that I'm sitting at my computer writing. Just not the thrilling adventures of being an author...(g)

I'm through Twittering. The last three requests to follow me have all been covers for porn sites. I'm done.

Unfortunately spam Twitters happen and Twitter tries to be as on top of it as possible.  You have the option to block them, though.  And easy ways to identify them are by their user icon and the twitter posts they have up (if it's one post consisting of a link--don't click it!), and the amount of followers they have (if it's in the 1,000s).  It's the internet, it happens.  I think the benefits of Twitter, when used in the capacities mentioned in this thread, far outweigh the drawbacks.

Okay, I jumped on the bandwagon and quickly became frustrated. I can't even get my picture to load. I've probably spent a half hour on this. I was going to write. I'll save it for another day.

Oh my goodness, so many Twitters to follow! :-) I was just browsing yesterday and lamenting the lack of a directory on their site. This is great, thanks Courtney! *goes and follows*

Cana, welcome to Twitter! What format and size is the photo you tried to upload?
