Hello!

I've been an aspiring illustrator for a long time now and I finally have enough images that I decided to go ahead and jump into trying to get work. But I have hit a roadblock while trying to set up my social media presence. Here is my question: What should I put in my about page/ biographies if I have not had any paid/published illustration work? I have sold some work and had gallery shows, but I'm not sure that will inspire confidence in any Art Directors when they go to read about me. The other thing is, how quirky and personal should you get in said bios? I have seen some that very very cute and then some that were bare bones and I want to seem professional, but also show off my personality a little and I'm just not certain how to really attack it. Thank you in advance for your help!

We all begin somewhere so it's perfectly fine to add your gallery show in your bio. I would write several different bios (long, short, medium) and decide what you feel most comfortable with.  You can also post your bio in the critique section to get some feedback before you go live on your website.

Here are a couple of bios that are short and funny: https://cyndimarko.com/me-stuff/ and  http://www.kevanatteberry.com/about
Here's another that is longer with inspiration included: http://sylvia-long.com/about.html
And here's another that is medium: http://salinayoon.com/About.html

What I love about all of these is how true they are to their own voice.
Good luck and remember that your bio will change as you grow and get more work.

Jeanne,

What Vijaya said. You probably want to try a few different versions of your bio. and see which one really captures you. Look around at different sites and see what parts you like and include those in yours. You can also beef up your site by including photos of different events. You can always start small at first and add more things later.

Good luck!
