We call it voice, so...
« on: June 09, 2008, 11:05 AM »
...what does your favorite author say to you?  Try to nail down the author's voice in ten words or less.

My favorites are Laura Ingalls Wilder:

"Life is hard, but God is good."

Samuel Clemens:

"I know more about folks than they know themselves."

(Actually, I wouldn't say Suess is my "favorite". But he is legendary.)

This isn't a quote, but it is a recurring theme in his books:

Wait, are we posting actual quotes by the author? I thought we were supposed to make something up to summarize their voice.  :eh2  :eh2

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking, so it's fine to summarize.  I was pondering voice, and suddenly it hit me that we use our voices to say something, and maybe it would be fun to summarize what an author's voice  says to us.  The author may not say the same thing to everyone, so there's no right or wrong answer.

By the way, I love what everyone has come up with.  :thanks2

Stef, I like yours about Laura Ingalls Wilder.  In addition to your comment, her writing says to me ...

"family comes first" and "obey/respect your parents/elders"

I think society has lost a little of that, which is why her stories are so enduring to me.

Stef: I LOVE that Samuel Clemens! Too true.

Hmm, I'll give this try:

Vonnegut: The world is populated by idiots.
MT Anderson:  Voice is relative
Carl Hiaasan: Save the planet, and save me a seat at the bar.

well, at least that's what they say to me :)

Frances Hodgson Burnett:  There is magic in this world -- never forget it.

Salman Rushdie:  Stories are real even if they're fiction
