SCBWI's Blueboard - A Message & Chat Board

Welcome!

Discussion started on

I love your entire site, and especially Writer Tips, Verla.  I hear people comment often that writers are hermits, glued to their keyboard and never seeing the light of day.  Too bad they don't know how large the writing community is, and how concerned for one another we actually are.  Writers are the most sharing people I know.
Now back to my keyboard.   ;)

Hi Devil,
Verla is often busy and not able to reply to all posts, so I wanted to make sure you got an answer.
Check out the illustration board lower down on this page, and the threads and links there can help you with some of the nuts and bolts of becoming an illustrator.
What is usual is that you, as an illustrator, would put together a portfolio and some other mailings, like postcards printed with your art samples, and send them to the art directors of different publishing houses.  If they are interested in your work, they will then set you up with a project.
Try reading through this website and messageboard and see if your questions are already answered in other posts.
Good luck!

I just wanted to welcome all the new people I've seen join lately. This is a great place to meet our peers and discuss the business.

PS Plus I was sick of seeing the title about pornographic spam as the first thread on the welcome page. Hopefully this gets bumped to the top.

Yes, you can reach the chat room through the link in the box in your upper-right corner.  However, people are usually only there between about 9-10:30 pm Eastern US time.

Hi all...I just joined today...am looking forward to exploring the boards. I already have 'seen' someone I know right on this list...Hi Jen Ward...and Verla, I may have met you several years back at an SCBWI-NE conference in Sturbridge MA or maybe Nashua, NH...or am I mixing you up with someone else.

I have one book out, another due in October, and I also have a bunch of verse I need to figure out what to do with. Am looking forward to meeting you all, and hope I can help as well as be helped.

Greetings!

I'm so glad to be here. This is my initial adventure, and thanks Verla for letting me join. I'm in the middle of developing a website and have sent a ms to a contact at a publisher. It's a humor picture book about flamingos. Hope to hear good news.

Best,

Hi, everyone. I'm Debbie Reed Fischer, and I'm new to this fabulous site. I'm a YA author with my first book coming out in April 08, Braless in Wonderland, and a second, Swimming with the Sharks, coming out in the Fall of 08. I've been lurking for a while, and just have to say congrats, Verla, on creating such an extensive forum where the kids' writing community can meet, share, and go to for support. I wish I'd known about this when I was experiencing the Rejection Letter Blues! And I'm so happy to see my friend Mindy here, as well as some friends from from my Class of Y2k8 group.

Glad to be here & looking forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome everyone!

Debbie, I'm glad to see you on Verla's. This is the first time I saw your cover for Braless in Wonderland--it's amazing...and I can't stop smiling whenever I see that title!  I can't wait until it hits the bookstores!

:typing: I guess I should introduce myself!  My name is Pam, although I've been Wuggie Norple on LJ for a while.  I write whatever strikes my fancy, which currently happens to be a middle-grade mystery.  This writers' community is a great resource for writers, and many thanks to Verla and all of the other people who make it run so marvelously!   :lov:

Hi, I'm Carrie Jones. I'm brand new on the board and amazed by how active it is and all these brilliant, helpful posts. And, um, yeah... I'm a little overwhelmed, too.

But I'm a children's writer. My first novel came out in May. My next appears in March, on my birthday, which is super cool.

I feel like I should just start begging, "Will someone be my friend?"

Welcome, Carrie!  The blueboards are often overwhelmingly brilliant and helfpul! :)
& Congrats on your novels--TIPS is one of my favourite YA covers out there.  It's fantastic.

I'm Debbie Reed Fischer, and I'm new to this fabulous site. I'm a YA author with my first book coming out in April 08, Braless in Wonderland,...

Wow!  I'd buy that book just based on the title.  Actually, I could write a whole story just based on that title... of course I'd have to call it something else.

Hi everyone, I'm Bren MacDibble, and I was a member a while ago but I forgot stuff... like my log-in... prioritising writing etc... etc... but now I'm trying to remember all those glorious, wonderful and important things.  I'm from downunder in the broadest sense of the word since I'm a Kiwi who lives in Aussie.  (a smiley seems to be missing - unlikely as that may seem)

I found this site again while trying to keep tabs on what a couple of my submissions to US publisher/agents might be up to, and it's proved to be very helpful, showing me that one doesn't need to be queried for at least a month and the other should've been queried a month ago.  So thank you for your help.

"Play nice." What a fun way to address all of the 'kids at heart.' Thanks, Verla, for the board. I look forward to participating in the community.

You probably didn't notice, but that "play nice" comment you quoted from DonnaJ was originally posted on September 1, 2003, the day this board was first created. What a nice reminder this is to all of us, Melissa, that nearly 7 1/2 years later we are still playing by the same rules on this message board. Thanks for resurrecting this thread and reminding us of this.  :grin2:
