How would you write the sound a wild turkey makes?
« on: November 15, 2008, 05:41 PM »
I mean, other than "goble-goble," which I have read, but does not sound like real wild turkeys I've heard.

I turn to you, good writers, because you helped with the sound of a kiss before. I'm after something that is not a cliche.

help... It's almost Thanksgiving :)

I found this site and listened to the various calls, but I can't begin to think how you would write/spell any of them. They call them cackles, clucks, gobbles, purrs etc to differentiate the different calls. Check it out.

gurgling metallic bleat: male turkey noise

randy jibbering: male turkey noise

concerned clucking: female with eggs or chicks (hey, did you know they build compost piles to keep their eggs warm kind of like alligators?)

merping: female with eggs or chicks

(and turkey beards are the weirdest things ever....)

You know, I always thought that they made a sound that was rather like a strangled lu lu lu ... but the essential part is the strangling part... after all you want to EAT the turkey

I don't know what they sound like but I recently stopped my car for two wild turkeys to walk across the road on a wooded hill at my son's college campus in otherwise urban northern NJ.  He sees them all the time and says they remind him of prehistoric/dinosaur birds.

:nothing but, those sounds are soooo cool!  Occasionally I'll go birding and I love to just sit and listen to all the calls of the various birds.

It is definately not the same sound as a domesticated turkey... but how you write out a bird call is beyond me.   Definately one of the most interesting questions of the year!   :bow

Do you mean to spell the sound?  I think it sounds like:

guttle guttle or ghuttle ghuttle   :yum

or a chortle/chuckle for a real word

and a random question... why does the code for the turkey smiley say yum?   :dr

I take great pride in my wild turkey sounds. (not to be confused with the sounds I made in highschool when somebody left a bottle of WT in the back of my parent's car...and I was the "new girl"...and the cops showed up...)

Anyway, my WT sound goes something like this:

blagud-gad-guddle blagud-gad-guddle

Don't turkeys have a wurble in there somewhere? I'm just guessing. (grin)
I live in Northern Michigan, in a small city, and one evening came home to a bunch of turkeys crossing my backyard. I was living close to downtown at that point. Very strange. There was all this fog around, too, which gave it an interesting atmosphere.
I have a dry-erase board with random quotes that will never mean anything to anyone else, and "Turkeys in the Fog" is on there because of that image. (You know, instead of Gorillas in the Mist...yeah, it's kinda pathetic.) It's right next to "Beware the Power of Forsythia!" I did say the quotes were random...

Pulled out our 3 bird field guides, with 2 simply mentioning "gobbling" plus this from Peterson's:

"'Gobbling' of male like domestic Turkey's. Alarm, pit! or put-put! Flock call, keow-keow. Hen clucks to brood."

Well, honestly, when I've heard turkeys made noise, it sounded most definitely like, "Gobble-gobble-gobble," said very fast with a bit of a warble in there.  No other spelling makes sense.  But I don't hang around turkeys enough to know what OTHER sounds they might make.

Well, I used to work out in a Southern mansion - most people would think they call them a plantation, but actually it was a working farm (yes, one with slaves), but it was owned by the state and they thought they were punishing us by putting our office out there.  HA, it was only our office and it was out of downtown... We went against traffic.  Now the domestic turkeys I worked with sounded like waaa waaa waaa. :whistle

But the wild turkeys that used to roost near the old barn sounded a little more sophistecated than gobble gobble gobble.  Maybe that is the Nashville, TN turkeys.   :smile

Ha ha!

If a wild turkey ended up on your dinner table this thanksgiving, perhaps it would sing, "Isn't it ironic?..."

I stumbled across this for some peculiar reason and now I have a problem.  One of my stories has a cockerel and a load of hens making a lot of noise.  Then I realised that I haven't got a clue what kind of noise chickens make.  It was an anthropomorphic story, so I wasn't bothered.  Now, I am.

PS: mine sang too, which makes it a whole lot worse! :eh2
