Anyone else here in Japan? I've been living here the past couple of years. I was an English teacher here 1997 to 2000, too. I don't teach English anymore, though.

I don't live there. I visited a couple of years ago and loved it. I got to see Hiroshima, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. I can't say enough about how much I loved the country and its people.

I wish!  I have always wanted to go to Japan.  It's my favorite country to teach my first graders about.  A former principal at my school spent a summer there teaching.  Maine has many teachers who have done a teacher exchange there and I hope I get my turn someday.  I once knew someone whose son (teaching English in Japan) sent me a huge package of materials, about 12 years ago.  It included letters written by 6th graders and a newspaper, lots of pics, etc.  Together with my pricipal's involvement (and stuff!) my unit on Japan is lots of fun, and as authentic as you can get in an instititional setting half a world away!

Hi Wonky, and welcome!

I lived in Yokohama from 1995-97 and loved it.

I think there are quite a few writers who meet in Toyko for conferences--have you tried the SCBWI chapter? Here's the link: http://www.scbwi.org/Regional-Chapters.aspx?R=78

I live in the suburbs of Tokyo...though if you saw it you'd think I was right in the middle of the city!

I'm not in Japan now but have lived there on and off for anywhere from a few weeks (research trips) to a year (exchange student, work etc) at a time. And, fingers crossed, am hoping to get back there next year for a couple of months if the grant gods smile on me. I've mostly lived in Gifu/Nagoya and but have spent a bit of time in Kobe (which I loved) as well as Tokyo (Gotanda and Roppongi, which I didn't love!).

I don't live there, but it has been calling me over there ever since I was a child. As I have 2 of my picturebooks set there - I am now a little obsessed.  I am even learning kanji. I desperately want to get over there. I have a personal pilgrimage I would like to make...Next year. When is the best time of year to go for about 3-4 weeks?

The best time to visit is springtime, easy! Especially during the cherry blossom season...which differs depending how far north you go.

Wonky!

I live in Japan! I was trying to find some fellow Japanese-living writers awhile back, then I got away from the boards for a bit. Just recently I've been writing another kid's book and wanted to see what was up here.

I'm in Shizuoka Prefecture (Yaizu, actually). Been here since 1990.

Hi Angela, I did find the SCBWI page for Tokyo. I almost went to the last event (the portfolio review) but I wasn't able to have my stuff ready in time.

I'm following up on my earlier post in this thread. The grant gods have smiled on me and I'm heading to Japan for 3 months in April. I'll be based in Nagoya but will shoot up to Tokyo now and then for bits and pieces (looking into SCBWI events and so on at the moment). My grant is to work on a novel for adults but I'm also hoping to make connections with poets and children's writers. And eat a lot of sushi.

If anyone's around and wants to catch up, or can recommend any useful listservs/organisations I might want to look into, please let me know!

I used to live and work in Japan too (17 years, all in all), and dream of going back some day with my husband. I got married in Japan, had children there, and lived all around:  one year in Yokohama, another couple in Tokyo, a year in Oita, down in Kyushu, and two more up north in Sendai, then eleven in Chiba Prefecture.  (Whew)  And I love the springtime there, but my favorite time of all is the rainy season (I grew up in a desert, so I have my reasons...)

I've been twice in the last two years: Kobe, Kyoto, Tokyo, Yokohama...(and anywhere I could get to on train!).

If I ever get back for an extended period, I'll remember to check here first. I could have used some help when my kid was missing (holiday weekend, trains from Yokohama to Kobe...let's just say he had a more incredible experience than his parents!...ok, he's 21, I always forget to mention that bit.)

I second traveling in the Spring. Plum blossoms, cherry blossoms. It's incredible.

Hello!  I realize this topic is a bit old, but I'm in Japan!  I live down in Okinawa.  I just joined SCBWI and saw there are Tokyo and Okinawa chapters, so I hope to meet more YA authors here.  If anyone's around Okinawa or is planning a trip let me know!
