I am resurrecting this old, old thread just so I can say in print somewhere that I think "bosom" is one of the silliest words ever used.  I don't like the way it looks and I hate the way it sounds.

I feel so much better.   :) :) :)

What?  No one mentioned the word "snuck?"  I think that's the worst word in the English language!  I can never use it without it sounding... well... WRONG.  Just plain wrong.

I know what you mean about "snuck", but there aren't a lot of kids who would say "sneaked," so you're caught.  When I have to use a word I don't like, it makes me feel like grinding my teeth.

peoples and fishes...they never sound right to me!  And WHY isn't there a contraction for "am not?" (ie: amn't)  If this contraction existed, we wouldn't have to battle with "ain't"!

"brrrrrrr" or "burrrr" for being cold

it doesn't sound 'right' or 'cold' to me.

I like freezing, shivering,

even some sort of choppy clacking noise word would work better

but when I see people covered in layers and shaking and they say "burrrr" - it makes me laugh and think that they are not cold, only faking it.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I learned something on Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader the other night. The plural for roof is actually roofs and not rooves?? It does look a bit funny when I see it spelled with the 'ooves' but to say it? ewwww.

It sounds so stupid to say "Look at all the birds on the roofs." So very wrong. So I now officially hate the word roofs. I will just call them rooftops from now on. Much easier on my brain.  :applause

Other words I hate:

~microsoft

~zed (as in the Canadian pronunciation of the last letter of the alphabet. I'm even Canadian and I can't bring myself to say zed. To me, it will always be zeeeeeeee!!)

~sandwich

Ha Ha Very funny that Verla had a black lab named Barf!

FWIW, I don't like the word "arf', especially as a name for a street. I used to pass a street called Arf St. on my way to school and I'd wonder who the heck came up with that one?

Although I recently read that the plural of "moose" is "meese" I will never use it. It's just...wrong!

Poignant. "It was a very poignant moment b/w them." Just say emotional or something similar.

Countenance.  "She had a very happy countenance...." Just say face or expression.

They drive me up the wall.  :banghead

Seriously.

Cant- stand- those-words.

Great topic.

I have to agree on the amn't contraction, although I guess we do have I'm not. Also, why isn't there a past tense for ain't, when your character can get away with using ain't? And how come there's no past tense for must? "I must find a solution." You have to resort to "had to."

Oh, this is about words we hate. I hate the word "pleasant," mostly because when I was a girl my parents would try to improve my attitude by telling me to be "pleasant." Where is the use in that? :)

My husband SO does not like the word swanky. Me on the other hand ... I love it. But perhaps that's because I know it gets his goat!

Can't stand the word cafeteria, maybe because of having bad experiences in them and the word latrine. Just do not like the way it sounds rolling off the tongue.

Monies or moneys...ugh! And I don't know what bothers me more, hearing someone say the word, or having to read it...It just sounds so wrong!

The only word I can think of that I truly dislike is "ladylike."  Hearing it generally elicits a rant or at least a snarl.   I've been trying to think of a usage of it that doesn't make me surly, but I'm failing. "Ladylike" is simply a foul word & foul concept, imho.

"fart" I hate that word!
or...I hate "shut up" too. My kids are not allowed to say it.
The other day my 6 year old said..."so and so said the 'sh' word." (in a tattle tale tone) My other two children's ears perked up. Then my 6 year old announced....She said "shut-up".  :dr

I can't stand "shut up." It's so insulting. I sent one of my students to detention for saying it to another stduent.
