I'm a visual effects artist by day and attempting to write and illustrate a book by night.  I create cg effects for feature films and commercials.  I ride the ferry every day to work and commute across the island and through Vancouver on my vfr800 motorcycle.  I'm actually a dual citizen of the states as well and did 4 years stationed in Italy as US Airborne Infantry before getting out and into this 3d stuff in 2000.  Father of two girls,  I'm currently trying to revise 13000 words of story and a bunch of sketches into something enjoyable to read by other people.

Check out my progress and let me know what you think: http://www.cindercast.com

Ciao

Am studying at Vermont College of Fine Arts in the picture book intensive semester.  Also have a MG novel draft deep in the virtual drawer.

Am here on a work permit but have my application in for permanent residence.  Wondering what you all think about submitting to Canadian publishers that require citizenship or perm residence while waiting for mine to come through (after all, it takes 2 years to publish a PB, so I'd  have my perm residence by then ::-)  )

Oh, hello Canadians!  And those who are Canadian-ish, as well!

I'm not going to consider myself late to the party - I'm busting out the second wind in honour of the board merge.   :partytime

My name is Casey.  I'm from SW Ontario, born and raised.  My day job used to be bookseller.  It's now library assistant.
Both have brought out the same attitude in me:  :readthebook:

I'm an unpublished author of both PB and MG books.  I'd love to hear from more of you, so I'm officially putting the call out:  "Coo roo coo coo coo roo coo coo!"

Thanks for reviving this thread, CK. It's great to see so many Canadians here. And how could I not answer to "Coo roo coo coo coo roo coo coo!"?

I'm Wonderview (Paula).
Home: Cottage country, Ontario. (If only I could find that moose icon. There was one in my yard just the other day.)
Nothing published in book form yet. I came thiiiiiiiiis close with a previous YA novel and hope the MG series I'm collaborating on will find a home.
Day job: Creative writing teacher to elementary kids and freelance writer/editor.

Anyone in southern Manitoba? I recently moved to North Dakota and I swear half the people in this town are Canadian. Half the license plates are, anyway, and the Canadian flag is flown about ten times more than the ND one. I'm 90 miles from the border and about 2.5 hours from Winnipeg.

(Um...and that map cracks me up, because the description is uh, rather accurate for at least the "South Manitoba" province/state I'm in...)

That's hilarious, Rose! I'm not near Manitoba, but I have friends/family in Winterpeg, as we call it. :)  :snow

Also, I recently moved from the Okanagan to Vancouver Island (lived here for about 9 years in my youth). I know of one BBer here, anyone else?

And Bob and Doug are the best. Take off, eh!  :moose

Question: Do we have a regional board for Canada that I'm just missing?

If not, I think there should be one - to talk about conferences, local critique groups, adding the letter u to words...stuff like that.

Well, technically Canada is two regions. :) but we are adding regional boards at the moment as requested by the RA's as far as I know, so you might want to ask your RA to contact us.

That's correct, Arty.

CKLyall, have your RA contact me personally, as I'm the one creating Regional Boards for each region. I'll need to know the region's official SCBWI name (Canada East or Canada West), what person on the message board your RA wants to be the Moderator of your regional board (it can be the RA or someone in your region) and whether your board is to be private (for your region ONLY), for all SCBWI members to see and post on it, or open for everyone. (The RA can send me a trouble ticket if that's easier than digging out my email. Just make sure on the ticket it's clear that the problem is to have the regional board created.)

Thanks for chiming in with more info, Verla!

I think CKLyal is from Can East region,  so if they want to request the board from their RA, I can put in a request for Canada West. I know we have plenty of Canadians in SCBWI!

Yes, we do have a lot of Canadians on board!

I know that all regions do not WANT to have a board here. Some of the regions are completely happy with the email groups, etc. that they are currently using. That's why I didn't make a board for every region. I'm only creating them as they request one, so that the regional boards we do have are for regions that really plan to use them.

Another British Columbian here, living on Vancouver Island.
I write mostly for magazines, and my poems, stories and articles have appeared in Ladybug, Fun For Kidz, Highlights (forthcoming issue), Boys' Quest, Knowonder! and others.  I'm working on a PB manuscript right now.   I've been a SCBWI member for about 12 years and attended the L.A. Conference a few years ago.  It was a blast and hope to go again this summer.

Artemesia, having a Vancouver Island Blueboard meet-up would be a hoot.  Maybe something to look into in the new year.   I'm in the Parksville/Qualicum Beach area, not too far from Cathiem's neck of the woods.

I know it's super-short notice but if any of you are in the Markham/ Stouffville/ Richmond Hill/ Aurora/ Newmarket/ Vaughan, Ontario area, we are having our first (ever!) York Region Children's Literature #yorkkidliterati evening out TONIGHT (May 20th). This is a chance to meet up with local children's/YA authors, illustrators, and others in our field for a bit of chit chat, laughs, and pub food & drinks.
