Hi Monica,

I have been researching the size dimensions for kindle myself all day, and have found through this YouTube Video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlWZulZbSRU ) that it is 600 px wide by 800 px high and I think the dpi doesn't matter.  Though in the video the instructor keeps the image at 72 dpi.  Hope this helps. :)

You're welcome.  :) You will also have to change the spread pages to single ones, because I am reading from a comment on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlbZ2weXhrU that it is a mess to try and convert the spread pages on the Kindle.

DPI only make sense if you are describing the size of an image in physical units like inches.  If you are setting the resolution to absolute numbers in pixels, you don't need to worry about DPI.

My self-published Children's Picture Book for Kindle "Undead Ted" was created for the Kindle Fire HD. Resolution was set at 1280 x 800 pixels. The new Kindle Fire HD (version2) has the same resolution but a PPI (Pixels Per Inch) of over 200. There are so many devices out there now you need to figure out what might be the best comprise resolution and go with it. My book looks good on an iPad and iPhone using the Kindle APP. I used full spreads and fixed layout. Getting your book to look good on a Kindle (or compatible device) takes some doing. I am working on a tutorial right now that hopefully will step someone through the process of creating a book just like my "Undead Ted". Hope this helps.

Yes you can do high resolution but there is a catch as always and I'm not sure why Amazon isn't doing anything about this problem. If your book is a fixed layout Children's Picture Book then the images are limited to a size of 256k each. If an image is larger than 256k Amazon will compress it on conversion to far less than that size which is a loss of quality. Currently there is a 50mb limit on total file size. It is nearly impossible to create a high resolution image for one of the new devices such as the Kindle Fire HDX at less than 256k. Comics are allowed 800k per image. If your not designating your book "Childrens" or "Comics" then the allowed file size is even lower.
