ePub in order to get published
« on: March 17, 2014, 11:33 AM »
I'm thinking of converting my PB into both Kindle and iBook format and then giving it away for free. The goal would be to get people to read it and review it on amazon and iBooks. I could easily send this format to traditional publishers for review and approval. Also, I would be building a following for my work.

I was wondering if anyone has published their book to an ePub format (kindle or ibooks) in order to get the attention of traditional publishers/agents? If I do this, would traditional publishers dismiss my books because they have been published before?

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Ben,

I could be wrong, but my impression is that traditional publishers would not be interested in your manuscript if it had already been available as an ebook.

Others' mileage may vary. Good luck!

Unless you managed to sell 10,000 copies of the book, it would not attract a traditional publisher. In fact, it would drive them in the opposite direction. It would be already published, and therefore you would not be able to sell first rights to them. (Most publishers do not do reprints.)

What they said. You kind of need to decide which path you want to follow--trying for an agent and/or pubisher, or self-publishing; it's very rare that a commerical publisher will be interested in picking up a self-published book unless it has sold very, very well.

Yes, what Marissa and olmue and Jody said.  :like

If you want to get the attention of an agent or publisher, query them according to their guidelines. Agents and publishers aren't interested in previously published books.

Giving away your book is not getting a following.
