March Madness tournament
« on: March 24, 2014, 06:18 PM »
The March Madness poetry tournament is now going on over at Think Kid, Think. I'm not in it this year, but enjoying reading all the poems and as always, amazed at what writers can come up with in a short amount of time.

Thanks for posting, Carrie. I was just coming over here to post myself. I have made it into the Final Four. I would love it if blueboarders could check out the poems and vote for their favorites. It also helps to like the link and, expecially, to share it with your facebook peeps!  Here is a link to my matchup and I thank you very much!  http://www.thinkkidthink.com/incontinent-vs-kerfuffle/

Great job, BJ!  :gogirl

Where else in the world can you find a villanelle starring the word "incontinent"??

Getting into the final four is quite a feat and you deserve it.

BJ, I was so impressed that you wrote a poem using the word 'incontinent' without resorting to potty humor. In a competition like this, I know it is tempting to go for the easy laugh in an effort to win over students - I appreciated that you made an effort to feed something beautiful into kids' minds. Great job. And did you see Jane Yolen's comment on your poem? I'd be doing the happy dance ALL DAY!!

thank you, Diana. When I realized I didn't have it in me to do a potty humor poem (although I made one lame attempt), I looked at the 2nd definition of "incontinent': unbridled, unfettered, etc. and immediately images of spring started bombarding my mind. Springtime is incontinent, riotous, unfettered. And also people are incontinent (meaning wild and unbridled in springtime because they've been cooped up all winter and just want to break out into the great outdoors and have fun.  That is how the poem was born.

I blogged about the villanelle form as well as my experiences with the villanelle in the wee hours at my blog, Blue Window  http://www.bluewindow.weebly.com

Thanks again, Diana!

thanks Carrie! And thanks for starting this thread!  :) Although I attempted one lame potty humor poem, I couldn't go through with it, just not my style. When I saw the second definition of 'incontinent, I immediately knew what I wanted to do. I explain it in my blog post: http://bluewindow.weebly.com/

Thanks again, my friend!

I've been out of town and off the Blueboard for 2.5 weeks, so missed the voting, but I would definitely have voted for your poem, BJ.  I loved the exuberance and joy of it!  And your ability to match the villanelle form with such perfection is amazing. (I had never even heard of that form and was delighted to learn something new.)

You are one terrific poetess!!  :woo   Congratulations! And thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you, Ev! I'm glad you enjoyed the villanelle. I've written a few villanelle's and I'm glad I thought of using it for the difficult word MM threw at me. It was interesting that my opponent, J.J. Close, saw my word, thought I would do potty humor, and so did potty humor himself, and the potty humor beat my villanelle by 8 points in the public vote! It was an interesting round, to say the least! :)

Barbara - Thanks so much! It WAS quite a challenge! I thought I would be out in the early rounds since I thought I would "fall apart" from the pressure, but I  was amazed that the pressure seemed to spur me on.  I haven't pulled so many all-nighters since college! :) I felt strangely exhausted yet exhilarated during the competition. Thanks again!
